Rear brake st1100

We can help, but we need a little more information.

What year and what model ?
The answer will be very different if you have an ST1100 with:
2 pistons on each caliper
3 pistons on each caliper

Read the code from the white label that is stuck to frame tubes under the rear seat - or ---
A photograh of the lower front fork leg and wheel from the left hand side (clutch lever side). Showing the full height of the wheel.
AND a photograph showing the rear caliper and as much of the brake disk surface as is possible to see. (Remove pannier)

Also, before thinking about a complete rebuild, start out simple. It may be that the slider pins haven't been lubed in 30 years and are sticking, but the pistons themselves are moving freely.

Just guessing since I've never had this issue, but it seems like a logical first step.

Or, if its a linked brake version, then it could be the SMC, which would complicate the repair steps a bit.

OP: that's why we need to know details of the bike specifics.
