Hi I have just become the owner of a 2011 model.first time riding one as I also have a GL1500 SE.
I am getting the feeling that the rear shock is bottoming out I have tried to adjust the preload but still feels like it's bottoming. Hope it's not a new one required as there not cheap.
Any ideas welcome.

Your preload adjuster is probably empty of fluid.
Search the forums for service for the preload adjuster.
It’s a ten minute job, and all you need is hydraulic Jack oil.

How many miles is on it?
The year model is not a reliable indicator how far it's actually been ridden.

The rear shock often has lost much of the preload adjustment after a few years. Depending on weight of cargo and rider the ST1300 can use 7 to 15 clicks of preload to get the shock operating in the middle 1/3rd of travel and resist bottoming out. Often 15 or more clicks offers no preload whatsoever but the preloader can be serviced very easily. The owners manual says 7 clicks IIRC but this is for the Japanese ideal rider of 150 lbs.

This tech article and many subsequent comments and additions should help get started in the right direction.
