Folks,
Due to the shabby condition with the paint flaking off I need to remove the final drive assembly ( 4 bolts fixing ) to get it re sprayed..
Would any one know if its an easy job, do I have to drain drive oil.
Any info would help please.

Regards
Davie

4 nuts make it very easy to dismantle, although I would take the tire (tyre) off first...
There is very little fluid in it; so, draining it will not make much difference.

Make sure you follow the alignment procedure when remounting or your splines will disappear (due to sloppy fitment).

thanks,
How much of an issues is the alignment procedure when remounting or your splines will disappear, will bits fall out ?

any pictures

You do not need to take it apart to spray it, carefully mask it off and spray it with silver smoothrite to get a perfect job, trust me I did mine, a lot of prep with a good wet/dry paper, wipe down and after masking it off spray.

Oh and slackening off the silencer makes it a lot easier.

PM me for any further info.

There is no way its worth taking it apart to spray.

The alignment procedure isn't difficult; but, I think Brian might have the best idea...

I didn't follow any alignment procedure when putting my FD/Swingarm back on... I'll have to go back and loo as I didn't think there was one for the ST1300, just not a lot, if any, play.

I tried to find the thread with pictures of when Adam (solototocoyote) pulled his final drive for a look but no luck. From memory we marked the final drive and swing arm with a reference mark on tape. This won't work if you are re-painting yours but a scribed line might. Anyway, when we put it back together it fell into the same spot it came apart from. I don't remember if we put the axle back through the swing arm and final drive before torquing the mounting bolts but that should line things up if you're in doubt.

I have removed the rear wheel and RH exhaust then done the masking and sprayed silver smoothrite on the final drive assembly in situe, it has came up good as new.
3 coats o paint and 3 coats o clear lacquer.

Have also done the same to the front forks, they have came up as new.

Will try and post pictures later once i know how to.

Thanks
Davie

That looks to be a very nice finish. Good job ! Do you reckon that stuff is good for forks too? I used to use hammerite for the st1100 swingarm. I hadn't come across smoothrite before.

Yes someone on here has already done it, I have not really searched but given some time I should find it, it is a job I will be tackling when I get a moment, the smoothrite is the dogs danglies and is a near enough match for colour. The pic I posted was a pretty poor pic, I did take a couple of others to send to my mate who has the same problem with the paint peeling off his fjr diff but I deleted them from my computer as I did not think anyone would have been interested.

Trying to add pictures of drive assembly and front forks but unable to do so, any idea's

File size and Picture size are usually the issue, try resizing them to something like 800x800.
