Do I need to remove the rear wheel in order to remove the rear brake caliper and its mounting bracket?

I understand that the rear wheel shaft must be removed in order to release the rear caliper bracket. With the rear wheel shaft off, does the rear wheel drops?

Mine does not. After I pull the rear axle the wheel still kinda hangs there until I start wiggling it back and forth while pushing it toward the brake. I also have to remove the rear fender thing that has the license plate attached to it to get enough room to pull the wheel out.

While you have the axle out this would be a good time to check on the splines and apply more Molly60 if needed. That would mean pulling the rear wheel totally off the bike anyway.

As Nicholas said, not on an ST1100. The wheel stays 'engaged' in the splines if you are careful when you remove the rear caliper. If you are just changing pads, you should be able to do that in place without removing the caliper.

If you only want to remove the caliper and bracket, place a block of wood under the rear wheel to keep it from dropping. The slight drag in the splines should keep the wheel in place.

No, the wheel will not drop and the caliper will remove without removing the rear wheel. You are correct.

Hi,

Thanks everyone for the information.

I need to remove the rear caliper to replace the piston seals and general servicing of the rear brakes.

After the rear brakes, it will be the clutch master cylinder rebuild kit and coolant replacement.

Having a good time with the old ST both riding it and working on it.
