You put your stuff in them,and then into the side bags,This way when you go in to hotel or camp site or work you just have a lightweight bag.(although they are made of durable cordura type material) They are cut for ST1100 bags so they fill them with no wasted space you would get from a generic duffel or MC soft bag,thus maximizing what you can carry .
