Helmets Scorpion EXO 1000 \ Shoei RF1000 Noise Comparison

I ride with the Scorpion EXO 1000 and was wondering if anyone here has ridden with both of these helmets? I have been doing a lot of research on helmets related to noise levels and the Shoei RF 1000 is ranked up as one of the quietest with any of the US imported helmets. (schuberth not included since no US distributor)

I think my Scorpion is a little load and was wondering how someone here that has ridden with both feels about the comparison of the two.

I rode with an EXO 700 and RF 1000 and concluded that noise comparo are not easy. Found that one that was quiter with one windshiled would be louder with another type screen. Or the quiter one with vents closed becomes the louder one with vents open, also differences if the wind is straight on or from the side etc.. So it partly also depends on your own conditions.

One thing that puzzles me with the Shoei, is that I get less noise attenuation with ear plugs than I get when using the same plugs with the EXO. The misteries of accoustics!
 
Not sure about noise, but I sure wish the other manufacturers could get it right with shield mechanisms.

I like the way Shoei has the visor quick removal system and their ratcheting-positioning system is the best.

I have been searching for a helmet with the internal sunshield feature, so far all the helmets I have looked at have crappy shield (outside visor) systems Scorpion included.

I looked at the Scorpion, but it has mickey mouse little buttons holding the shield, which I could see getting lost somewhere and the little lever to pop open the shield a small amount to prevent fogging is inadequate to the point where it would not hold the shield open that small amount like is needed for anti-fogging.

My Exo-1000 doesn't fog... so I don't worry about leaving it open that small bit :) I think it is a breeze to swap out the sheild. I had a Exo-700... swapped out the clear for a tinted... easy on/off. Compared to others I have had... no comparison.

I was talking to a vendor... they are working on a flipup. Supposed to be the first Snell rated flipup :rolleyes: I just hope it doesn't weigh a ton :o:

Over all I really like the scorpion EXO 1000. I've had no problems with the shield mechanisms. However I have had a plastic pin on the cheek pad brake, and the shield fogs a little now after about 8months. ("I may have cleaned it wrong or something"). It's a little heavey and a little noisy but not as bad as my "HJC".

Just wanting something a little more quite.
 
I love this site and have read many posts about helmets, seats, windshields, boots, etc. After following some of the advice, I have concluded that because each of us have different shapes, sizes, etc., without specific information about the bike setup and the person, it will take some time to try different brands either in a store or from a site that allows returns. You will find what suits you best and should use the information found here to guide you in a direction, but what works for someone else may not work the same way for you.
 
Well I recieved a SMALL RF 1000 this week to test. My first thoughts was the shell is too small. The chin guard berley came down to the bottom of my chin and the bottom of the shell over my ears seem a little high. They were a few hot spots inside and the cheek pads were super tight. When I added my Starcom headset, I could feel a little pressure from the speakers and I thought that might not be to good on a long ride.

After much thought, I decided to send it back and try a Med.

However I did take a little test ride "Don't tell no one" and the helmet was a lot more quite on the highway with the screen about at my mouth level. The pin-lock anti fog shield worked a lot better then the scorpions anti fog shield too.

The RF 1000 seemed louder with the screeen all the way down though. It seemed the wind was just wipping into the bottom of the helmet. I guess because it did not come down as much as the scopion's shell because of the smaller shell size.

As soon as I get the Med, I'll post more info.
 
I have the Scorpion EXO 1000 and a Shoei X-11. I feel the Shoei is quieter. However, I like the flip-down smoked inside visor of the EXO a lot. I've found windshield and visor positions that help minimize the noise.

For example; my Cee Bailey with vent has been cut down 3" shorter than stock. What I can do is run the shield up to where the vent is in line with the top of the dash, flip down the inside visor and flip up the outside visor. Air flows over the flipped up visor with very little noise. With the inside visor down it is like wearing glasses so you do have eye protection. Other times I'll even ride with the inside visor up when cruising slow for additional air flow.

As wet weather gets here I'll switch back to the Shoei because it seems to seal better.
 
Yes I have noticed this to. If the scorpion shield sealed a little better or had an adjustment to get the shield a little closer to the seal, it would be a perfect helmet. All they need to do is redesign a better shield and they could have a strong position in the market.
 
I have had both the Scorpion and a Shoei. I think the Shoei is a little quieter and has a much better visor adjustments. But you can't beat the price of a Scorpion or it's comfort and safety. I just wish they'd add more dentents to the visor adjustments and engineer a more secure visor clip. I'm on my third set in three years.

Byron, Do you were the same size helmet in both the Scorpion and Shoei? The "Dealer" told me the Shoei ran larger the the Scorpion. I ware a Med in Scorpion so I order a small in Shoei. The head area was a little to snug and the cheek pads were real tight. Hardley any room for the starcom head set. I sent it back and orderd the Med. Now I have a two week wait....

Yesterday, the "dealer" finally had a med in stock for me to try. It seemed a lot more comfortable. The head area was about the same as the scopion which is just a tat loose. I must be in that in between size....to big for a small and to small for a med. I have the same problem with shoes. Can't never find a 12 1/2.
 
I wear a XXL in both the Shoei and Scorpion. I tried a XXXL Shoei on once and it was way too big. I don't think the Shoei's run larger.

You're dead right about this. If they did, I would never buy anything else. It just bugs the heck out of me that the first detent has such a large opening, where on the Shoei, the first position is barely cracked. Perfect for keeping a shield free from fogging at low speeds.
 
I wear a large RF1000 and the large EXO 1000 was what fit me best when I tried them on at the shop yesterday... The Scorpion fit just a bit loose until I pumped up the cheek pads a bit... Size seems to be close to the same to me... And the fit seems similiar also...
