Sena - Charging Question

Excellent. Thanks Jason. Your actual experience with these tells me that the output voltage of these things is compatible with the Sena.

Can I assume that any device that I plug a USB plug into will have the same output voltage (5v ?) ?

YES.... usb is a 5v standard output... current may vary on output device ( usb ports on computers usu 500ma, ac plugs usu output 1-2 amps) and the unit will take what it needs.
 
The SM10 transmitter is no problem as it appears that it can be permanently hooked up to the bikes power.

I understand not wanting to have a wire running to your helmet. You could slide the sena unit off your helmet at night and plug it into wherever you have the sm10 unit charging. Of course that line would need to be "hot" all the time. I get 12-13 hrs of constant music out of my smh5. It only becomes an issue on real long rides, and then I just deal with a wire to the helmet for one tank of gas, then I'm good for the day.
 
Thanks Randy. About 30 seconds before I got your reply, I sent a message to Sena asking about the input voltage & amp requirements.

Just now got a reply from Sena. The questions have pretty much been answered in this thread but thought I'd post what Sena had to say:

"You can use other wall chargers like the ones for the iPhone.
The charger we supply has an output of 5V and 1.0A."
 
Most if not all wall chargers for phone gear, GPSs, etc., use a USB A port which provides 5VDC at a minimum of .5A. This is the same port found on computers. So you can use this type of charger on any gear using mini-USB (lots of GPS units) or micro USB (Bluetooth headsets and any USB-powered gear sold in the EU) cables. I don't know what port Sena gear uses but I'm guessing micro USB. Some gear such as older Jawbone BT headsets use a USB-A to proprietary connector.

The only difference in USB chargers is the number of ports and capacity. That's why I get dual port wall and car chargers with both ports rated at 2.1A. This way I can charge two USB devices of any size and type, with the appropriate cables.

USB B connectors are used for printers, external hard drives and other peripherals.

The new versions do use Micro USB. Just an FYI, the older versions use a proprietary connector. 2.1 will definitely charge much faster.
 
I have some USB supplies that I do believe are fibbing on how much power they will produce. Hopefully this weekend I can split open and measure real time amperage of some and see. But I bet the old saying of too good to be true comes into perspective.

If they are of the cheap, off brand, or no name variety, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see output amps all over the place. I tend to stick with known brands as I feel it reduces the risk to my devices and lowers the risk of shorts and fires.

Got the SMH10 & SM10 Friday. Hooked it up and they paired easily. I even tested the SM10 with a Walkman and my Valentine One hooked up at the same time. Sound from both came through the headset just fine. Now all I have to do is attach the SMH10 to my Shoei for a real world test. A trial run won't happen until next week though because of all the blasted rain we're getting.

Something I was pleased about was that there was no delay of sound when I turned the V-1 on. I had read somewhere (here??) that this was a problem with some bluetooth transmitters.

I do the same. Besides possibly reducing the chance of damage shorts and fires chargers from establish manufacturers tent to last longer IME.
