Santa brought me a Sena bluetooth headset (SMH10), BT transmitter (SM10), and Sargent saddle for Xmas. I installed it all last week and did a 270 mile test ride down the interstate to break in my new saddle and to see how well my Valentine 1 & Sony Walkman could be heard.

The Sena performed very well, especially the radar detector. I could hear it clearly, even at speeds of 85 mph. I like how the RD completely cuts out the music then goes back to it in graduated fashion once the alert is finished. Above 70, the music was a little weak despite moving my helmet around to different positions. I suspect the walkman's maximum output isn't real strong to begin with. Despite that, listening to Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and many other rock tunes sure made the time pass quickly. I'd probably not want to listen to it on rural secondary roads but it's seems to be great for cutting through the boredom of long, interstate runs.

BLUETOOTH

I like simple, non-permanent setups of my electrical farkles. My solution was to put most of the electronics & bluetooth gadgets in my magnetic tank bag. The only thing I wanted on the outside was my radar detector which velcroes to the dash. That way when I want to wash the bike, I just take the tank bag off and remove the V1 and I'm ready. It has the added benefit of allowing me to throw the tank bag onto my other bike so as to have radar detector capability on it.

Here's what I put the SM10 & associated Valentine electronics into before sticking it in my tank bag. It's an old plastic CD box. The wires emerge from slots that I filed into the top of the bottom lid using a small, flat, cross-cut file. Each component is velcroed to the inside of the box:

...and here's where it goes in my tank bag:

SADDLE:

Here's a pic of it on the ST. I'm pleased with the looks.

On my test ride, the Sargent performed about like every other Sargent I've owned. It isn't a Russell Day Long but it's a good 400 to 500 mile per day saddle that I can flatfoot. I tried a LAAM saddle on a 50 mile ride with Redfish a couple of months back but there were a couple of hot spots on the bony parts of my rear. I sat on Jeff's (4jranch) RDL but as expected, I couldn't flatfoot the ST with it, so I decided to just stick with what I knew.:

If you need a little boost in volume for the music try adding a boostaroo. I had to do that for the sound coming from my 550 into the SM10.

I thought about that because I have a Boosteroo that's been sitting in my closet for about 10 years. Should still be good.

For the SMH10, are you using helmet speakers or earbuds? I've found with earbuds that fit well, it kills 2 birds with one stone - I no longer have to wear ear plugs, and I get better sound.

So, what earbuds are you using, and how'd you connect them? Inquiring minds want to know...

I don't think there is a way to use ear buds with the SMH10. It has a wired set of helmet speakers that you velcro to the inside of your helmet. I use these speakers in conjunction with earplugs.

You can download a copy of the users manual here to get an idea of what you can and cannot do:

Look at their website Mick. It's a different helmet clamp. Sorry it's difficult to post a link from my phone.

Finally got around to searching for it on the Sena site. There are four "kits" for use with earbuds under the Accessories tab (look for "Helmet Clamp Kit - ... " in the list). When I first looked at them, I thought they were complete new sets that were modified to accept earbuds but on closer inspection, they were minus the main units so they are indeed just the clamps with the mic & earphones.

Go the the accessories tab at the link below and the lower half of the list has a number items that start with "Helmet Clamp Kit - ... ". There are four of these that mention earbuds. The odd thing is that no prices for these items are listed.

In order to get a price I had to go to Revzilla. Here's the one for the set with the boom mic (I have the universal set):

Price isn't too bad.

That's a pretty slick set up... Hows the V1 range though? Good enough for the riding speed?

The range on the Valentine 1 is excellent. There have been times that I've picked up signals so far down the road that I wished it weren't so sensitive. Keep in mind I live along the Gulf Coast were it's pretty flat so there's not much to stop the signals. If I were in mountainous or very hilly terrain, that would be different.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but this thread seemed to be the most appropriate place to ask it:

How does your SMH10/SM10/radar detector set-up deal with priorities? I'm new to both Sena and Bluetooth, but my research suggests that other inputs can "cover" the radar's audio alerts (which are, of course, quite important to receive immediately!) unless an SR10 is used. I suppose it depends on whether you have another A2DP device (e.g., phone or Zumo) paired with the SMH10, though. I do, so I think I need to establish the radar unit's priority over the other SMH10 inputs using an SR10 or another HSF-profile Bluetooth transmitter (most, if not all of which, have been discontinued in favour of A2DP transmitters).

Ciao,

How does your SMH10/SM10/radar detector set-up deal with priorities?

I only use the Sena for radar detector and music, both of which are plugged in to the two SM10 bluetooth transmitter ports. The radar detector (which plugs into the auxiliary port) takes priority over music. It completely cuts it out, then when it's done, the music fades back in. I don't know what the priorities are if you add other bluetooth devices that are paired with the headset. I'm sure others can answer your question or you could try contacting Sena.

Perhaps the user manuals on the two devices could answer some of your question. Here are links to the user manuals:

When I tried the SM10 w/SMH10 and radar detector, I was not too happy with the 1 second it took to open a channel and send the radar detector signal. For me, that was too much of a delay for something where 1 second may make a lot of difference in how you use it.

However, the 20S is supposed to fix that by allowing multiple BT connections 'open' but I've yet to see any review on anyone that's tried one so not sure if that really does fix the issue I was having.

I did not know this. Maybe it's been happening to me all along and I just never noticed it with my setup.

Yeah, if you watch the display on your RD, you'll see it go off and then a delay before you hear something.

My understanding is that the Sena SMH10 can have one Advanced Audio Distribution (A2DP) Bluetooth connection and up to two Headset (HSP) or Hands-Free (HFP) connections (which I erroneously referred to above as "HSF"). The non-A2DP connections always have priority over the A2DP connection and the intercom, so an instant-on warning device, such as a radar detector, ought to be connected using an HSP/HFP connection. Unfortunately, very few Bluetooth transmitters use HSP or HFP, which was intended for use with monaural telephone conversations, as A2DP is much better in nearly every way. AFAIK, apart from some obsolete non-motorcycling Bluetooth adapters (e.g., Jabra A210 and Cardo BTA II), the only currently produced HSF/HPF Bluetooth transmitter I am aware of is the Sena SR10. (I was going to bid on a Jabra A210 on eBay until I realised that it automatically turns itself off after 4 minutes--not real good for a radar detector.)

As things stand, I believe I will need to buy an SR10 in order to properly integrate a radar detector into my Bluetooth system.

Ciao,
