Quick question....

i have a 1996 1100, Standard, and have long wondered about ABS. Looking at CL today and see an ad for pretty nice 98 with low miles for sale, but it does not mention whether it has ABS or not.

So, I text the seller and ask. He replies "How do I tell ?"

Aahhh... Errr... uhm ???...... I guess I have never seen - or at least paid attention to detail - an ABS model. I have seen some images where there is a "sticker" that says ABS/TCS on the side cover , but other pictures of models listed as ABS that do not have that sticker.

So, is there something the seller .... or myself (looking at a picture) ...could look at at and quickly be able to tell if a bike has ABS or not?

Sorry for the dumb question..

Odie1.

Pic of the front calipers should do it.

If it looks like yours, no ABS. If it looks like it has a little something extra, safe bet it has ABS.

The Front fender is different, the ABSII has a raised fork protector part that looks like Owls ears or something

Thanks - I also see looking at parts diagrams there is a "plate" on the front fender that says "ABS/TCS"... it appears...

And - I see what you are talking about Slydynbye on the fender.

That said - the picture of the bike for sale has a front fender and calipers.... just like mine, so - no ABS

Thanks everyone!

ABSII model differences: The raised fork protectors on the fender, 3 piston calipers and the black horizontal cover above the caliper. Sales pics are sometimes not too good, so an easy way to tell from a distance is the non-ABS calipers are silver and the ABSII are black. ABSII on the left, non-ABS on the right.

I'm just stunned that the owner is so uninformed about a bike that he has ridden that he wouldn't even be aware of this! What else does he not know, or has not bothered learning what needs attention on that machine? SHEESH!

Bush,

Was thinking that myself... Especially when the ad said something along the lines of "Finally found my dream bike, but can no longer ride it...." ??

Paulcb... thanks for the side by sides...

I learned something today....

Would'nt the instrument panel have added traction control indicators lights at top?

Yes, the ABS and TCS lights are at the top, which moves the blinkers below the lights, as shown below...

Hmmm. The ABS panel could allow one to use the ABS lights for other things, like aux. lighting or cruise control.

Just what I was thinking, Larry. Though there is so much room in the standard panel for additional indicators, I’m not sure I’d change it.

True, but nothing looks as good as factory-molded stuff. When I added a cruise control to my NH750ST, I wired my kickstand-down light through a resistor to do double-duty as the 'engaged' indicator to avoid adding a light.

Interesting, I never knew the ABS speedo had the primary markings on speeds ending in "0" (10/20/30/40, etc.) I just assumed they all had the ending in 5 convention like the non-ABS version. Was that an ABSII change?

Good eye Doug. I had to go look at mine to be sure, but my ABSII has the primary markings ending in 5. I pulled that image from Google, so no idea where it’s from other than it’s primaries are in MPH.

yeah, I wonder if that's from a British ST1100, or should I say PanEuro. I had thought they'd gone metric, but was over there this summer and they're still on MPH just like us backward Americans.

BTW, the ending in 5 convention ends up working better anyway because the speedo is about 5mph fast around 70-ish. So you just pretend the longer lines are actually ending in 0 values and it removes the speedo error.

I really like and prefer the look of that speedometer. Ending it '5' makes sense here since most of our speed limits end in '5' as well.

That and we apparently can't handle visualizing indices equating '5".

Yep. I really like how that looks.

Ours end 0, as does every speedometer I've seen in this country.

Aren't those dash panel pics of the 1100 too? With the analog fuel/temp guages...

Um okay

Uh yeah... Scroll up two posts to kiltman's post.

So collectively we've solved the mystery of 0s and 5s. Whew. Maybe this won't be an 'oil' thread.
