G'Day...

1°/3°C, overcast, fog, gray, damp, dull... 🌫️
rain predicted for the afternoon... gonna get interesting with the partially still freezing-cold ground... 😁

variations of Nespresso... :coffee:
more home baked bread, butter, jam... 🍞🧈🍓

didn't do much yesterday, won't do much today either... 😜
we're gonna swing by the shed in the afternoon, checking if the base pan of the split a/c has sufficiently de-iced...
apparently it didn't drain properly, ice buildup was slowing/blocking the fan in the outdoor unit, so the kit stopped with a fault code...
In the 8°C frost protection setting, the system doesn't run many real long, efficient defrost modes, which would normally flush the base pan...
was there on Friday, tried to restart the kit, heard the "...chrrk-chrrk-chrrk..." of the prop-blades scraping, turned it off and hope for the weather taking care of it... not gonna climb around on an iced roof with gradient... :cautious:

ze GF, who just finished zooming through the place accompanied by the angry whirring of her cordless vacuum, has now positioned a deck chair right in the middle of the living room with an electric massage mat on top... so more angry humming... ;)
Some spots and muscle fibers are still pinching from the surgery scars...

So, enjoy the no-sun-day...

Good morning thanks for the coffee start Martin. 7 degrees under cloudy skies here in central NY heading to a balmy 13 with snow moving in sometime time this morning. 7-14 inches between now and tomorrow this time. Time for the big 45" man eating Toro walk behind to earn it's keep. Have a great day all and be safe out there. Stay warm.

Good morning everyone

Looks like the more alarmist / pessimistic forecast was closer to correct. We've got an inch or two already, with more coming down in the form of tiny flakes or pellets. It's expected to continue pretty much all day, perhaps transitioning from snow to a nasty mix of snow, sleet, ice, and freezing rain for the remainder of the day, until around 2200 hours. but tapering off (dropping from a 99% chance to just 5 percent in that time) after 1900.

It's 13°F now with an expected high of just 22. The wind is about 6 mph from the NE, blowing the crud deep into the open end and side of carport.

I'll play a bit of uke, then may tog up and do the first of what I expect will be several snow clearances. At this hour, I'll just hand-shovel our driveway and sidewalk; running the snow blower would wake the neighbors for no good reason, as we'll get a lot more that needs clearing, rendering early efforts largely wasted. Later this morning I'll fire up the beast and do a wider clearance, with another around 1600 hours. We're due next door at around 1700 hours for lasagna and Key lime pie, a snowy-day tradition I can get behind..

Snow clearance aside, I may take the rest of the day and do nothing with it, or at least nothing of consequence. I'm unenthusiastic about changing from snow clearance clothes into biking togs for a go on the indoor spin bike, and then back into outdoor clothing again. We'll see. If not that, there are numerous indoor diversions available: Mexican train dominoes, card games, books, and of course the idiot box.

Stay safe and well everyone and tell your dear ones you love them. Do it today, NOW, for tomorrow may be too late.

Thanks for the coffee Martin!

It has been quite cold here. Last night I walked by the indoor screen and it showed -4F. As I type this it shows -1F/-18C with a forecasted high of 7F/-14C. The snow is supposed to start roughly noon-ish and by dusk be approaching 2 inches per hour. It should lighten during the night but still continue well into Monday. The total snowfall is still expected to be up to 24 inches (roughly 61 cm) by the end.
This morning I will spend a couple hours at my eldest's house celebrating my making another trip around the sun and then scurry back home to settle in and watch the snowfall. Hopefully this snow remains fluffy and doesn't pull down any wires!

Indoor tasks today may include taking a nap and rolling quarters. Like many people, over the years I have tossed loose change into coffee cans and the like, returning little of it back into circulation. Over the last week I decided to sort it out. By sorta scientific means I think there is $75-$80 in pennies alone. I found a stash of coin rolls so I am filling what I have, but am going to need a lot more.

Anyway, be safe, be careful, and beware - that fluffy snowfall might have a hard center!

Morning all and Happy Birthday Scott! :birthday:

-23 here, with a windchill of -34. It's sunny and will "warm" up to -16/-24. The snow's supposed to start here around 8pm and continue until Tuesday noon-ish. Calling for +-30cm.

I think Keith asked the other day can it snow when that cold, and yes it can. There's no temperature that's too cold, well maybe absolute zero, but as it gets colder it's less likely too due to the moisture content in the air. 0C/32F is when you usually get the heaviest snowfalls due to the maximum moisture content & big flakes. The colder it gets, the lighter and powdery the snow becomes.

I'm hoping that my back feels better to snowblow in the morning, but I'm not optimistic given it's ongoing state. Oh well, it could be worse, so I count my blessings.

Hope everyone has a great day, and if you're the birthday boy, enjoy! It's time for a change.

Obo.

Good morning, and thanks for the coffee start, Martin.

It's 6f/-14c this morning, rising to 15f/-9c as the day progresses.
Weatherunderground says it's snowing out, but it's probably evaporating before hitting the ground.
We're due for real snow by noon, and it'll continue through tomorrow morning. We expect 5-8" today, and another 1-3" tomorrow.

We got out to CVS to pick up meds for Brenda and then to the appliance store to get new filters for the 'fridge.
On the way home, we though of taking lunch, but thought better of it. By the time we got around to Linner, 2 of our preferred restaurants had zero parking, so we moved on to plan C. Their Prime Rib was good, and we settled down for a "Hunger Games" marathon.

Today, we've already hunkered down to await our weather fate. Both vehicles are parked on one side of the driveway to allow for easier snow blowing.
When I heard of the 5-8" forecast, I was like meh. We've gotten rid of more during other snowstorms. I guess we're not directly in the path.
Brenda was promising homemade turkey soup, so we'll see what develops.:potstir1:
I do like your snow tradition of lasagna, though, Keith.

Enjoy the day,
Steve

G'morning all, on this cold, overcast, soon-to-be-very-snowy Sunday.

I brought out the "big guns" this morning; fired up the Breville and am currently enjoying a large cup of frothy latte (double shot). Yummy. The current temperature is -20°C/-4°F with a feels-like of -27°C/-17°F and that will only change by a degree or so. The snow should start coming down around 2 p.m. and will continue to fall steadily from then until tomorrow evening.

@Weaselinsuit: Ted, I just read your post about your older pup and am very sorry to hear it. Sending hugs.
@sah48: Happy Birthday, Scott!

Everyone have a good one, stay safe and warm, go safely (better yet, don't go at all) and don't put your back out shovelling.

Patty

It's Sunday, and look at all these early risers here already. Must be Martin's Nescafe that brought everyone to open-eyes status.
I haven't made coffee yet, because while I've been up over an hour, I feel it's a good day to go back to bed.
No one here owns a snowblower, or even a ski-doo (I know, the folks call 'em snow machines... but that sounds too much like a snowblower). You'll be hard put, to even find an old-timey snow shovel.
Rained all night, and I don't think it can snow when the air temp is in the 50s, so none of that.
However... when it drops back down to mid-20s tonight, I think water will freeze. And there's gonna still be wetness around, so crashing is a big probability for those who "need" to drive somewhere.
We shall see.
I won't tell y'all to "be safe", but at least TRY to use good judgment, m'kayMcKay?
EDIT: got caught up in the snow talk and forgot to wish Scott a Happy Birthday!

Good morning all!
Thanks for starting the musings this morning, Martin!

Happy Birthday Scott! Here’s hoping your day is everything you want it to be!

Mr. Ted, it’s a terrible thing to have to say goodbye to a faithful companion!
They’re one of our family!

Well, I’m almost there! I’m headed to Cambridge Monday afternoon, I have things to take care of Tuesday. Then headed south to Florida, hopefully missing most of the storms, thinking of crossing the border then overnighting near Toledo.
It will be an opportunity to meet with friends that we last saw last March.

I must again thank those who reached out to me!
Until it’s you dealing with someone’s (who is dear to you passing), you really don’t understand the importance of friends!
Thank you!
WB
PS
Please have that “all too important end of life discussion” with your significant other!

Happy Birthday @sah48 !

:run1::run1::run1:🎂🎂🎂:birthday:

I do like your snow tradition of lasagna, though, Keith.

Me too! Not only is it very tasty, I don't have to make it! Downside is, the neighbor only makes it during / after a "significant" (>= ~ 6") snowfall so we don't get it terribly often.

The three of us on the court who have snowblowers got out a couple hours ago, as the snow was starting to transition to sleet, and cleared all the sidewalks and as much of people's driveways as we could (most folks have at least one vehicle in the driveway, which impedes power equipment) for everyone on the court and around the corner, as far as the driveway of the fellow in his upper 70s. I'll probably be rewarded for that with a bottle of good single malt, sometime later on.

We'll probably have to do it all again sometime between 3 and 5 (lasagna is at 5) and perhaps once again tomorrow morning. We'll see.

Aren't you concerned about the cleared areas accumulating ice on them and becoming dangerous slippery surfaces?

If we know, or are expecting, freezing precipitation we will usually leave the snow there so that the ice will accumulate on top of it and will be easily removed with it later when we do the snow clearing. If there is no snow the ice sticks to the sidewalks, driveways, walkways, etc., and creates treacherously slippery surfaces that are much harder to deal with.

Nice to have someone else make the lasagna. Brenda doesn't, because there are only the two of us. We've got to have at least two others here for her to consider it.

Our snow started around 10:45, and it's coming down lazily.
I'll probably snow-blow later this afternoon, and then after things end, tomorrow.

That did occur to me but in the end I think getting the snow moved while it's still relatively light and fluffy is a better approach than allowing a wet crust to form and freeze.

Nobody's really going anywhere today anyhow, and possibly not tomorrow either. There won't be much stirring, if there's any.

Morning Martin & All from (dare I say it?) sunny, Southern Utah!

We keep hearing about this big storm just east of us, and even seeing some of the results. And I hate to say it, but blame it all on Kaliforniastan! Yep, They have a couple of "Highs", sitting off the coast and that's causing all the storms to go north, then drop down on all of you, causing it all to miss us, here in Utah. Otherwise, those storms would come through here, not as cold, but would leave the wet & white stuff here, so you guys wouldn't be getting it all! :unsure-2x:

The little storm we got here Friday & Saturday, have gone, heading your way to meet up with the storm coming down from the north. So, right now, we are done with any moisture, but the cold is still here!

Currently, @ 10:30am, it is 30F, up from 12F, and heading for 39F. the winds have been blowing from the WSW @ 1 to 5mph. For the rest of the week, the temps should go up to the 50Fs.

@sah48 : :birthday: Hope it's been a good one for you!

Chris just texted me, she's on her way home. So, she should be here in just over 3 hours.

Eggs, bacon, toast & OJ to start the morning. I just might have a Pepsi, before heading off to church @ 1:30PM. (About the time Chris gets home.)

Anyone :bl13:, have a great day on the roads! (But stay off the icy ones...) :hat3:

Good Morning Coffee Club, thanks Martin for coffee and starting today's thread. Happy Birthday Scott. Sunny day here on the Left Coast, Froze overnight to -4 C , Presently -1 C at 9:46 , high forcast 5 C . Just got a Call from my Sister who is Visiting our Mom in the Care home, both are doing well, good news. Today's agenda, make Pancakes for Wife's breakfast/ lunch, and looking like time to mow the yard, I'm Serious stuff is already growing. Y'all stay healthy G

Just home from a trudge to the grocery store and back- about a mile each way, and not altogether unpleasant though I wouldn't want to be forced to do it on a routine basis.

I was right- almost nobody is out though I did see a few vehicles (other than snow plows), one city bus, and a handful of like-minded pedestrians. Among the latter was a family from Mongolia; she remarked without further elaboration that the snow here is different from what they're used to back home.
