Hi, I know the forum wisdom is to replace the entire SMC units, but I'm trying to avoid another £200 in parts because getting my ST through the MOT test has been somewhat expensive this year! There used to be talk of an SMC rebuild kit, but I can't seem to find one. Does anyone know if they are still available to buy in the UK?

Many have used ronayers.com in the US, I have no idea about tariffing and such.
Isn't David Silver spares on your side of the water? I've never had to order from them.
But you will find precious few successful rebuilds in our midst, though some have tried. There are several valid reasons for the rebuild failures, covered in several threads prior.

For a North American 2005 model year ST1300 with ABS it is Honda P/N 45620-MCS-G04, PISTON SET, SECOND MASTER CYLINDER.
For a North American 2009 model year ST1300 with ABS it is Honda P/N 45620-MCS-R02, PISTON SET, SECOND MASTER CYLINDER.
2007 and earlier model year ST1300 brakes are different from 2008 and later model year ST1300 brakes.
You did not state what year ST1300 you are asking about, or whether it has ABS or not, so you will need to verify what the actual correct P/N is based on what you have.

I’m curious as to why you think that the SMC needs a service kit ? Can you give us more information ? What symptoms are you getting ?
eg - if you have dragging brakes, then we’d need more information and some photographs to help diagnose the problem - but I’ll wait for your description of what you are experiencing first.
But to answer your question, yes you can still get them. I use Fowlers for all my parts and they show them as in stock for both models.
eg pre-2008 model Here - fiche numbers 2 - Full SMC (in stock) and fiche number 20 - Service kit (in stock)
2008 and later models Here Fiche number 2 - Full SMC (not in stock) and fiche number 17 - Service Kit (in stock).
For Fowlers, 'Not in Stock' means that they don't have it at their own warehouse, but they do have access to warehouses in UK and Europe where it is currently showing in stock. They can usually get these within 2-7 days. Phone them to find out.
As the number of owners dwindle, the remaining stock is centralised to make it easier to access. I have found Fowlers to be much more effecient in getting stock than DavidSilver - and the price difference is negligable. You have to watch out for VAT being included and deliver costs.

A few points:
- Generally speaking, installing a service kit for the SMC is not a good solution - you may still need an SMC so you would be wasting your money, or the issue may not be anything to do with the SMC. It may be to do with whoever fitted your last set of tyres, for example.
- If you have been searching the internet, you will have picked up a lot of duff or incomplete information. eg - If you mention 'ST300' and 'brake issues' to the keyboard warriors on (say) Facebook , “It’ll be the SMC” would be a common response, which is really not very helpful, and can often be wrong. It's worth looking at, but knowing what you are looking for based ont he symptoms is often cheaper. Thats where we can help.
- There is no MOT test that checks the operation of the SMC. They check the performance of the brakes with the front wheel on the rolling road. They check the performance of the rear brakes with the rear wheel in the rolling road. The roller has devices that measure the amount by which the roller is being slowed down. If it reaches the required level, then the bike passes. In neither situation does the operation of the SMC affect the results.
