Anyone have any good suggestions for a portable electric space heater? I only have 110 volt in my garage. Just need something to knock the chill off while farkleing. I've been using a really small one that my wife has in her office, it doesn't work too well. She gets mad when she has to go looking for it in the garage. Time for one of my own.

Perhaps consider a kerosene heater, at 23,000 BTU it'll heat up a garage in no time. It's portable and fairly inexpensive to run. Just be sure to crack the bottom of the garage door an inch or so. A well maintained kerosene heater will have little or no odor while operating (with the exception of shutting down).

Keep in mind that anything but an electric heater will require ventilation -- otherwise you run the risk of building up toxic levels of carbon monoxide.

I know. I hate kerosene & propane heaters. I tend to get headaches around them even with ventilation. I guess I'm just a sensitive kind of guy?

I've got one Kerosene and one Electric. Depends on the size of your garage. My one car garage heats up fine with a $50 electric unit from Walmart. My two car garage with a high ceiling needs the 115,000 BTU Kerosine Jet heater to keep it warm. The kerosene heater creates carbon monoxide so if your garage is well sealed, that unit - or any kerosene unit - isn't a good idea.

With any fuel burning heater....a Carbon Monoxide detector is a good idea...

I have one of the single head propane radiant heaters that connect to a 20lb tank. Work much better than any electric heater that can run on 110V, and very economical. No smell or fumes either.

Yup, and a family of five died here in Dallas the week before Christmas because they used one to heat their house. Carbon monoxide is oderless, tasteless, and invisible -- but it will kill you.

I have a large 3 car garage and I purchased an electric heater for Graingers. 26,000BTC as I remember, so it takes 220 voltage. It was about $250 as I remember. It will be a little more trouble to install the wiring with the 220, have to go back to your elect. panel or hook it too the clothes dryer circuit. Here is the URL http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/ww...rs&op=search&Ntt=electric+heaters&N=0&sst=All. Dave B. Denver

If you have your service panel in your garage you could put a kadet wall heater in it. I also love my oil filled electric heater that we have used for years. If your furnace is in your garage you can put a vent in the ductwork.
Lots of options but first and formost be SAFE!!

The problem with an electric heater is the amount of heat that you can get out of one that is made to use on a 120VAC circuit.

A common heater that is sold to work on 120VAC is a 1500 Watt heater. 1500 watts is equal to approx. 5120 BTU's......which ain't much. Stop and think about it this way........you might as well grab your wife's 1500W hair dryer and go out to the garage and try to heat it up. Pretty much 1500Watts is ........yep.......1500Watts.

Obviously you can buy larger electric heater that will produce more BTU's, but most of them will have to be hooked up to a 240VAC circuit.
