When I start out from home, it works for a few miles, then shuts off. After restart, it can work for a few moments then quit. After everything is up to operating temp, say 15-20 miles, it comes back on and seems to be fairly reliable.

This all happened shortly after installing an Audiovox cruise, but I thought the Audiovox wires tapped into the ignition and brake light and had nothing to do with the speed sensor.

The cruise continues to work fine when the speedo does not. The odometer quits along with the speedo. I know, I have the service manual and need to pull plastic off to test things...dang. Just had all that plastic off...

I'm wondering if the cable needs to be lubed. Is there a cable to lube on the ST like on the Wing that I had????

He lists an ST1300 in his sig line.... No cable to the speedo (at least not from the front wheel) like the 1100..

I've gonna guess a loose wire on the coil where you tapped into for the signal to the Audiovox...

The coil wire shouldn't affect the speedometer, as I think it gets its signal from the VSS at the rear of the transmission.

Had the same problem on my 03 ST. I changed the Speed sensor at the back of the transmission and problem went away.
Hope this helps.

Finally installed my speedo sensor yesterday, the hardest part was gaining access to the plug. Also, might as well change the oil simultaneously, because it really runs out when the sensor comes off. Also, remember to move the o-ring from the old one to the new one.

It's nice to have a reliable speedo, fuel mileage computer, and tripmeter again, even if it is 7 or 8% off.

Do you happen to have the part number. Also, what did you pay, I have a quote over $100.00. Is this a fair price?

First I do not have a ST so this is real general. On my harley when the speedo starts getting goofy most of the time I can pull the vss and wipe it off and put it back and all will be fine. ymmv.
