Spline rust and dust

Plastigauge. That's what mechanics call the 'play dough' that John spoke of. It's really quite easy to use. You pick the appropriate color (using the size you think you will need) put a 1' piece of the worm into the spot and tighten to torque spec. Remove the flattened piece and compare it to the size chart on the Plastigauge wrapper.

Available at auto parts stores.

I have some Plastigauge, but is there a spec for clearance there? Can not find anything in the service manuals.

So far it looks like I'll do as John suggests and either double up thrust washer if they sell me the same, or install the thicker plastic if that is what they sell me.

Thanks to everyone for all the tips.

Thanks for the new part number.

The number I have is 42616-MT3-000, so I guess that would be for the thin steel thrust washer?

Since the original poster also had similar wear, this might be something they should look into as well.

One thing I noticed is the thrust washer sits "in" the hub, like it has worn the hub down leaving a small flange around the outer edge of the hub. This is not noticable with the washer in place but removing it reveals a sharp edge about the same thickness as the thrust washer.

Also does anyone know if the hub splines are made of a softer metal than the final drive splines. Mine are not perfect at 100K. My beemer cousin says good for another 100k. Sorry no pics.
