ST1100 alternator drive shaft fitting.

Help. I have a 1998 ST1100. Trying to refit the alternator drive shaft but I am having great difficulty getting the inner bearing (see photo) to locate in its housing. I have worked out how to align the gears but cannot get the bearing to go into its hole.
Anyone had this problem?
Anyone got any ideas how to solve this problem?

The real problem is that the geared drive is in two pieces and you have to align them to insert the drive.
You can use a Lewis pin (Google it) or a 12mm hex wrench in the outside 'shaft', 3 8x32mm bolts to hold the unit in place and gentle turn it clockwise and tap it until the gears line up and the unit slides in (look on the second page) -

I've got the gear alignment bit sorted. I just cannot get the bearing to slot into its housing.

That's interesting - once you get the gears aligned properly the drive usually just slides right in.
