ST1100 Clearview Shields

Just received my ST1100 windshield replacement.
Currently, I have the one from national cycle, who is already a few inches taller than the stock windshield ( 20 inches vs 16.75 ).
At 6 foot 1 inch tall, I was still getting lots of flies in my helmet.
Another improvememt will be the Pressure Relief openings.

I ordered the Clearview XL, and it is another few inches taller (21.75 vs 20 inches) than the one from national cycle.
I will install it later and be back with my riding appreciation.
You can see here on the picture, I just hold it over the old one, and I'm showing with my left hand the top of the old one, underneat.

I order it on may 30, they had to make one, just for me, and it was shipped to canada on june 20.
Shipping was a bit expensive (about 80 US) but hey... look at that package : big box with thick cardboard, full of foam padding.

It also comes with a new set of mounting screws. What else can we ask for.
 
The nice things is if it doesn't work for you and you don't remove the plastic 'sheeting' you can return it - assuming their policy has not changed.
That's so you can install it and go ride to see if it works.
I have Clearviews on all 4 of my ST1100s and I am very happy with them.
 
Which version Clearview do you have Phil? At some point they made a change, almost removing the 'flip'. Original one (no longer available) worked fine for me ... until it tipped over against a guardrail. The newer version pretty useless by itself, needing a lip attached to eliminate buffetting.
 
I bought one for the Silverwing- same packaging (all that foam). That shield will likely make a nice quiet pocket of air for you when riding. In SC it’s been really warm (had a really comfy June) so I’m using my Laminar shorty shield (9” shield with the lip on top)- not too quiet but decent airflow. On the Swing, it’s nice and quiet behind the shield vs the OEM shield.

Yes, they still have that same policy, @Uncle Phil . A big orange sticker warns you to not remove the masking until you checked it fits perfectly, that it is the good tint, have the good vent option and you can even test drive it. After that you can peel the masking. Otherwise, you can still send it back.

I confirm, @DeanR . I've seen lots of pictures of that windshield older version, with a flip recurve on top.
The newer version is just straight, all the way. And... I'm just guessing, it's probably working ok without it.
There must be a reason why they stop making that recurve. Better aerodynamics or easier to make, I don't know.
You say you find there is more buffeting now ? Do you have one with the PRV ( Pressure Relief Vents ) ?
I chose those PRV in hope it will reduce the buffeting.

Yeah... I will probably order their shorter 9 inch version, for when it's really too hot. And it gives the ST1100 a really hot, sport look.

Original flip version, no vents or cutouts - no buffetting.
Revised straight version - much buffetting. An add-on lip stopped it. No vents or cutouts. I only use it for some winters, for the extra width. The rest of the year I don't want the width, preferring the wind on my arms.
I also sometime will use that shortie Laminar shield. Nice clean air and looks cool.
 
Riding test done.

I'm really happy with my new Clearview windshield.

Before ordering, I followed their instructions with the 50 feet distance and how to measure the heigth above the ignition switch.
At 6 feet and 1 inch (with shoes) I took the taller one, the XL, and as you can see from that picture, I have no problem to see well above it when I ride.
I took that picture in a parking lot, and I reproduced the view that I have in the riding position.
See... that's a little bit more than the length of a parking.space (18 feet).
So, I'm seeing above the windshield at a distance of... say 22 feet, wich is very good.

I went on the freeway, at 60 mph (100 kmh) and yep, much more quiet than previous shield. If I just raise my head a bit, 3-4 inches, pushing on the foot rest, I hear and feel the wind.

That shield is also made from a thicker material. And it is also 4 inches wider.

So, I removed the plastic masking film.
I really like it and.I'm keeping it.

Thanks to @Uncle Phil who helped me out on the way to install the center rubber grommet containing a nut. It must be the heat... I was putting it the wrong.way.
We have to push that rubber grommet into the trim, and not feom inside the trim.
Then, when we tight thight the scew, it pulls the nut inside the grommet, and it compress it. The resulting enlarged mushroom prevent it from getting out.

Rubber grommet pushed in place. The windshield is going over that and the screw will get in. But wait.... what will hold it in place ?

View from inside the trim. The screw had pulled the nut inside the grommet, who completely got compressed, and the enlarged diameter holds it in place.

Am the same 6.1 just got same model same cool colour ,but bit disappointed with wind
Noise have Arai rebal helmet hits top helmet
Would higher screen like urs fix it.
