St1100 headlight problem.

Progress report

When I went to replace the main fuse it wasn't blown so I put the fuse back in, reconnected everything and hey presto everything including the lights were working again. I tried to start the bike and there was a loud click from the opposite side of the bike to where the main fuse is and everything went dead again. I waggled the main fuse holder (solenoid?) and everything came back. I have cleaned all of the contacts I could see but it still seems a little temperamental. Perhaps it's time for a new solenoid.

Cheers

Have you pulled that pink-ish connector from the starter solenoid? I'd start checking there...

I have indeed pulled that connector and although it doesn't look too bad I suspect that that is where my problem lies rather than the solenoid itself. I am going to do the red wire mod to see if that improves things any. I'll keep you posted and thanks for your help.

I'd give it a squirt with some contact cleaner and then seal it with some dielectric grease, ACF-50 or such...
It might actually also be a good idea to remove the fuse boxes to check and thread their backsides (as well as their guts and all fuses inside) in the same manner.
During/after riding in the rain (or after washing the bike) quite some dew accumulates there, combinations of different alloys, contaminated water and current flowing are an interesting combination...

Did the red wire mod and all is well once again. Still have to tidy things up with the new wiring and make sure everything is water tight but it's all looking good.
