Since there's not much spare room on the ST1100 ABS, I wrote up some instructions with lots of pictures and printed them in PDFs (this was my second install - still have one more to go!). Sorry for the numerous sections, but I could not get it to upload in one PDF. If you find any mistakes, let me know. Included are how to separate the Stebel compressor from the horn trumpet which gives you a lot more options of where you can stick the pieces. Hope it helps someone on their next install!

HOUND found somewhere in the Stebel information that the compressor was not supposed to be more that 25 degrees tilted or premature failure could result. Mine on the Frost has been installed for about a year and 12,000+ miles and so far no trouble. So I guess I'll find out if that is Stebel 'lawyer' talk or reality. ;-)

Should the "ground" on the figure in the last pdf at the top of the figure be +Batt connected to terminal 85 of the relay?

CARL - I are confused ... Terminal 85 on the relay is what I call the 'trigger' terminal - the one that 'switches' the relay on. Because I am 'pigtailing' off the hot wire from the existing horn terminal, when the existing horn toots, it triggers the relay for the Stebel so it toots. Did I miss someting?

Maybe IR confused. It looks like the horn button top lead should go to Batt+
to get the juice to term 85. IOW how did the bottom side terminal of the horn button get hot if the other terminal of that switch went to ground.

Then again I haven't had coffee yet LOL.

CARL - Well, Duh! You are right. Thats what I get for plagarizing another diagram then modifying it ... :eek:: It should be all better now! ;-)

Uncle Phil,

Good evening/morning. Thank you for your time and effort to document and photograph your installation. Your generosity is appreciated! I hope to perform a similar install this month. Btw, I am considering your split method while utilizing the space near the bottom left fairing, just below the knee or forward of the left foot. I'll post the results or issues.

Btw, please confirm the schematic error identified earlier was corrected on your new or revised attachments/documention.

DAVID - Just brought it up and it's got the correction. It really didn't matter in some sense because that part of the wiring you wouldn't be messing with anyway. Hope the pictures help. I know for me pictures really help bring meanings to the instructions!

Good article. I like the fact that you put it in PDF so I can print it out and take to the garage. I may start doing that.

Impressive work documenting this installation, Uncle Phil!

ScouT is a non-ABS model '99, and FWIW I was able to mount the Stebel horn underneath on the right side just in front of the locking compartment. I used an Eastern Beaver harness and it was truly plug & play - works great.

JOHN - Glad the PDF thingy worked for you. I figured everybody could use that format easy enough. I'm like you - I like to print stuff out and have it handy when I've got grease all over my hands ... ;-)

GEORGE - Yep, the standard has quite a bit of 'extra' room but on the ABS, it's full of 'stuff'. I believe the main thing on the Stebel is keeping water out of the compressor. Evidently that kills one pretty quickly from what I've heard.

Yup the PDF's are great, I was gonna move my computer to the garage when the wifeypooh said "I don't think so, you spend enough time in the garage, as it is!"

Phil's diagram is electrically correct. + volts to the horn button then to 85 on the relay AND parallel to the stock horn. Pressing the button honks the OEM horn and triggers the relay for the Nautilus horn.

  • The ground next to terminal 85 is to complete the circuit for the OEM horn.
  • The ground off terminal 86 is to complete the circuit for the relay trigger.
  • The ground off the compressor is to complete the circuit (thru the relay terminals 30 and 87 from the aux. fuse block) to for the Nautilus horn.

Good job Phil tho looks like it'll make future maintenance under the plastic harder. Having just completed farkling lipSTick (1100 ABS), I agree there's minimal space under the tupperware.

Things like valve adjust, etc. With the other stuff compressed in there just more hassle getting the tupper ware off/on. It's what we gotta put up with I guess.

GEORGE - Hmm, I guess the compressor and the air hose would be sort of in the way for a valve adjustment. But since it's just hanging by clamps, it would be pretty easy to slide off the mount and out of the way. Also, if you had room in the tailpiece, I believe you could actually put the compressor back there or where the air canister is/was. It would just mean a longer hose to run to the trumpet. But now I understand what it was you meant!
