St1100 won't start

I used a very long piece of wire, used 6mm bolt to line up the gears. For the gears to mesh. This process took about 30 minutes of wiggling and jiggling the shaft assembly to get in. Then the wire decided to break off the screw. So sump off. Then managed to encourage the screw out. Now begins the rebuild.
 
Ok, the beast is back together. However there is an oil leak. Seems the sump gasket has failed. Got to order another new one. The sump didn't look damaged when I cleaned it before befitting it with its gasket.
 
I think I remember an older post where after sitting for awhile, the starter somehow got "locked-up".

You could remove the starter ( easy and quick to do after taking off some plastic ) and seeing if it spins when connected directly to a battery.
