I just replaced the rear pads on my 2005 @ 13,000 miles - seems pretty early to me... What's the normal life for these?

I replace mine about every 10K miles, whether they need them or not. When I change tires, I do the brake pads, and brake bleed at the same time, so I don't have to remove the rims more than once. Works for me.

Yes, I'd say that is a bit early ... my original pads went to 45.5k miles and still had just under 40% of the wear material remaining. But how long pads last does depend on how you ride and the condition of your SMC (if the SMC doesn't release, the rear brakes drag).

I got 52000 out of my factory brakes and their was still some left. No I dont baby the bike...9000 miles out of a pr3 is average on the rear. I am an avid downshifter and always looking way ahead.

Not to hijack the thread but does the wear indicator squeak like a car indicator would? Do you find the back pads typically wears out first? (non ABS/linked 2005)

I keep a log on when I changed mine out
New EBC Brake pads fronts and rear. Aug 04 2011 28,200 miles
New rear brake pads EBC, the thicker ones. Apr 23 2013 48,150 miles. Rear pads lasted 20,000 miles.
Apr 23 2013 48,150 miles. 50% left on the front EBC front pads, 20,000 miles on them.
EBC has just started to make thicker pads for the rear like the Hondaline ones. Thinking I should get another 10,000 miles more on the rear now.
I also remove the pads and scrub them clean with hand cleaner and a toothbrush every 5,000 miles. Also de- grease the rotors at that time too.
Brake pads are a really easy to change and a cheap maintenance item to do. Take care of them and they will take care of you.

The wear indicators are visual and and not audible and yes I find the rears wear quicker than the fronts. 2005 non-ABS

Actually there is an Audible indicator... that you waited too long :rofl1:

I always check mine during a tire change and that's when I usually clean the caliper and pistons up a little but I only replace them when they get close to the indicator or if I have a long trip and I feel like I'm pushing it with what's left.

The rear ones wear faster and the inside front left one also wears faster - probably due to how the SMC functions so if you're looking at the front ones, always look at all the pads to gauge the wear.
