I never noticed on my ST1100. I have had three ST1100's. Now I bought a 2005 ST1300 and it seems to have almost a whining noise. I have followed the instructions per this link:
http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/ST1300_b.html#Engine
but it did not correct anything. Is it just normal that these engines sound a little like whining compared to other motorcycle engines? I didn't even notice it when I bought the ST1300 but since I still have my ST1100, I am able to notice the difference in the sounds.

You ain't seen nuthin' that can sew like an ST13!! Reminds me when I first rode an 1100 and thought.... this is it, I want one, pulls like a tractor.... bought an ST13 without riding it.... surprise, they're different in the way they deliver power. All good, you'll get over the sound.

They are just cloaked really well. If you want to hear their real power, remove the mufflers! :rofl1:

I can't hear the Hy-Vo chain whine above 2500 - 3000 rpm anyway , just tire and helmet wind noise . You hunker your ears down to the tank and it's just a quiet humm . Love it ! It's quieter than my '91 GoldWing.

That's why I put the Staintune mufflers on my ST and to get rid of the cats which held a lot of heat.

So quiet, sneaky fast. The day I chased a BMW down on the interstate and passed it, I think I heard her growl. Or it could have been a chuckle.

I am a sail designer and sometimes repair guy. My sewing machines actually sound better then my ST.
So I stuck on some staintunes to try to make it sound like a motorcycle. Now it sounds like a WW2 fighter plane.
I like it! I don't think this bike can be made to sound like a bike.

This thread, and the other 2006ish linked thread are both informative and funny... pretty norm for this forum.

Prior to joining the Navy in the late 80's I was a diesel/auto mechanic and really loved the sound of the turbo spinning up... Still do, love pulling up next to a tractor trailer and hearing that and knowing what kind of power and torque that thing is putting out.

To me, the sound of the ST between 2000-4000rpm is pretty close to that turbo spinning up sound and around 5000 it opens up pretty good and will scare your buddies when you go past... you can only follow so long.

I like the flat drone of my 360 degree V4 heard through the intake tract as it pulls through mid range. Joey Dunlop's V4 makes a similar sound as heard on that Isle of Man TT video from 1983.
