ST1300 Final Drive seal replacement?

I have a leak on my (2004, 78K miles) final drive pumpkin, on the wheel side under the plastic cover ring - as best as I can figure.

Originally I thought it was the typically-implied seepage of moly from the splines, as many people have indicated; so I just kept an eye on fluid levels and cleaned it up each time. Gear Oil level was never noticeably low, and after clean-up it would take a few hundred miles for the grunge to reappear along the bottom of the unit.

Now that I'm replacing driven-flange bearings this week I took a much closer look at the pumpkin and see that there's a moderate amount of "wet oil seepage" evidence on the wheel side of the pumpkin, under the plastic guard ring, and the closest I can come to a diagnosis is that the seal around the spline/cup is the culprit. It's pretty grungy now after a good 30K+ miles since this was first noticed, so it's not entirely clear if that seal is indeed leaking.

Since removing/replacing the wheel isn't a trivial job, it's not very easy to trace the actual culprit of this leak, so I'm thinking I will order and replace this seal. The service manual only calls for a whole process of tearing down the entire pumpkin, something I think I can avoid for this procedure, but I thought I would ask if anyone else has done this.

As near as I can tell I should be able to carefully drill a couple tiny holes in the seal body, place small screws, and use them to pull the seal out, and then place the new seal back on over the spline/cup. Anyone know if I'm off base, here?

And similarly, anyone else followed this diagnostic process and find out that it was something else besides the dust seal?

Nobody? :(

I guess I'll have to try it and see.

Worst case scenario, I take it to a dealer for a rebuild, and get fresh bearings out of the deal, prolly cost a couple hunnert in the process.

|I had a leaking seal at 80 K on my 2005. The part here in Canada was $18, and it is an easy fix. I just pressed on the old seal with a screw driver and it popped up on the far side. I greased up the new seal and used the old seal as a driver and tapped it into place. Problem solved completely

Re: ST13 Final Drive seal replacement

I started a thread in JUNE dealing with a DIFF on my WING seeing it closely resembles my ST DIFF. There's not much info on this item. At least you can procure factory parts for the ST...the aging '82 WING there's nuttin' available anymore...so when the time comes total dissassembly will be req'd and I'll have to hunt-down aftermarket bearings and seals. If you're going inside the DIFF maybe procure those "O" rings as well.

Thank you! This is what I wanted to hear. :)

Re: ST13 Final Drive seal replacement

I have had the seals done on mine, I believe there are two seals, an inner and outer, I had mine done by a garage as it was more than my mechanical knowledge could stretch to, the seals were pretty reasonable, the expense was the time doing the repair.

In my case, the grunge is clearly not coming from the inner/smaller seal, or my splines would have been pretty saturated, so I'm reasonably sure that if a seal is leaking, it's the big/outer one. I have the seal in hand now, all I need is some time to clean up the pumpkin and put the new seal in.

... and receive & install new bearings in the driven flange.

... and try to resolve the lower tank thermistor issue.

I seem to have procrastinated too much on my squawk list, I guess! <sigh>
