Got to looking at the weight capacities on my new to me 04 ST1300 over the weekend. I was wondering if I could put more in the Honda trunk than I currently had in it. But, thought I should check the carrying capacity in weight. My owners manual, and a sticker on the bike says the luggage rack capacity is only 10 lbs. Inside the Honda trunk, it says its empty weight is 12 lbs. So, if I leave the trunk totally empty, the luggage rack capacity is already over by 2 lbs. How can you carry anything in the trunk? Am I missing something here?

I don't have a trunk, but I can tell you my soft bag usu holds about 30 lbs when filled and I haven't had any problems on my tail rack
( use an extender to support bag from falling over lights)

I have had at least 25-30 lbs in the top box no problem. I do try to keep the weight in the side bags if possible though the lighter the top box the better. But you can certainly put more than 10 lbs in it.

So, does the 10 lb. capacity mean top box plus 10 lbs? The top box weighs 12 lbs by itself, according to the sticker inside of it.

That is why they don't sell them in the US.... ;)

I don't have a Honda trunk but I have had no issues in loading as much as I can cram into my Givi E52.

Never had any issues with 20 pounds in the Hondaline in the top box on your bike. It's been on the bike since shortly after I bought the ST and has had zero problems. I made sure that it really didn't go over that too often. If I'm not correct, I believe there is a factory sticker that was or is on the rack is 20 pounds. You might check the instructions that I gave you with the top box for the capacity.

I don't doubt it will hold quite a bit. I was hoping this thread would get me some real world experience from fellow ST'ers on how much they were putting in the box and whether it was causing any problems since the instructions seem to contradict.

I just found it contradictory that the luggage rack capacity is 10 lbs, and the top box weight is either 11 or 12 lbs (depending on what Honda literature you are reading), which if you do the math, shows you are already overweight even if the top box is empty. The documentation I got from you on the top box says its carrying capacity equals the carrying capacity of the luggage rack - the weight of the top box. The owners manual and a sticker on the bike say the luggage rack capacity is 10 lbs. The document that comes with the top box says its weight is 11 lbs and the sticker inside the box says it weighs 12. If you take literally would be 10 lbs minus 11 lbs (or 12) equals minus 1 or minus 2. Probably Honda's way of limiting liability.

The lawyers wrote the weight limit. Practical people who actually use their bikes ignore it. If I paid attention to the weight capacity of my bike, my wife and I couldn't ride together.

Thought I could be of some help here until I got waaaaaaay to confused. We need a drink!

No offense meant in my previous post. This is what I was trying to do with my post. I thought I would give my real world experience with my sold ST and topbox that you now own. Just my 2 cents.

+1 :D

No offense taken. Your real world feedback was exactly what I was looking for. I was also kind of curious if anyone had found out if the printed Honda information was in error and if corrected information had subsequently come out. I'm poring over this site trying to learn all I can about the ST1300. Love the information that gets shared on this forum.

Yeah, I always laugh at the weight limits for this bike. Isn't the total weight capacity for rider, passenger and other stuff in the pockets/saddle bags/top box not to go over something like 350lbs? Whatever it is I had to laugh when I first saw it. I weigh probably 230 ATGATT, I have a bunch of stuff in the top box and bins pretty much all the time. That would leave enough spare capacity for maybe my 6 year old. But she isn't big enough to ride on the bike yet. I know when I have gone camping in the past I have been way over the limits.
