I am planning to replace the fork bearings, is there anyway to do it without spending $165 for the steering bearing lock nut tool?
Alternative on Ebay are much cheaper, but I am wondering if they are deep enough for the job...
Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

I bought the UK version off ebay. It works great. Ifi remember it was around $40 USD including shipping.

If you use tapered roller bearings you don't need the special tool at all because you won't be setting preload to service manual values. All you need is your imagination and a tool like a C spanner, a long nosed pair of needle nose pliers, or even a punch and a light hammer to set the initial preload that seats the bearing. After that the adjusting nut is backed off to finger tight or very little more.

This is amazing, I didn't expect so much help!
For now, I am just planning to check the torque and the state of the bearing, but I will contact you if I need to replace it.

Could this scale be accurate and convenient enough to set the torque values on the T?
I know, I am maybe asking something difficult to advise...

Depends how accurate it is on the low end. Spec on the ST1100 is only 3.3-4.4 lbs. A lot of folks are just doing it by feel. FWIW YMMV

John
10 grams accuracy and digital doesn't always means more precise than analogic for sure.
I was mainly wondering if that design/range could fit the job.
Doing that by feel require some experience that I don't have.
I am trying to troubleshot some instability with the fork and I want to diagnose the problem on a rational way.
To be honest I am already confused and frustrated, I can't rely on my feelings at this point.
Thank you so much John!

I think I'd be looking for one in a scale of 25 to 50 lb max. Do you have a friend with a trigger pull gauge that you can borrow?

The problem with doing it by feel on the ST is there is a lot of disassembly and reassembly required to access the adjustment and lock washer.
