Steering Stem socket

What I need to find out is the SIZE of the RETAINING NUT that binds
the triple tree clamp onto the steering stem. I don't need the tool for
the bearing nuts underneath.

So, does anybody know the size of the socket needed to loosen and
remove the RETAINING NUT?

I've heard a few different sizes tossed around in this thread, but nothing
definitive.

Here's a couple fiche links to look at, is the bolt you're looking for in these:

Nope.

I need to know the size of the nut above the triple tree clamp above all this.
It's visible just below the cover between the two handlebars.

What I ultimately need is the deep well socket to remove the triple tree clamp so
I can adjust the steering bearing nuts beneath.

That's the one ~!

I need to get it removed, but I have the riser plate with just enough clearance
in the hole to insert a deep well socket in to loosen it. I really don't want to remove
that riser plate if I don't have to.

Harpo,

If you remember my 27mm was too small. Last week I picked up a 30 mm and 32 mm both were too large. Try a 28 or 29 mm.

OK. I'll be shooting for the 29mm .. probably pick one up at the Autozone
and test fit it first. I need to get into those steering head bearings and
snug them to specs.

Please poST the actual ST1300 stem nut size when it's determined. I'll put a socket of the correct size into the STOC ST1100/ST1300 Steering Stem Races/Bearings R&R Tool Kit. The kit has already been used by one ST1300 owner and I assumed that the 30mm socket in the kit for ST1100 stem nuts also fit ST1300s.

It appears that few members do this maintenance item, or we would have had an
answer to this issue by now. Perhaps most are taking their bikes in to the STealers
to have it done; I don't know .. but it is significant that nobody seems to
actually know the size of that nut.

No matter; we'll get it nailed down.

This is for the castle nut.

Same #... It is a little tight but it works . Mine was a little buggered up from using the wrong sized pipe wrench so that may be why it was tight. A very light tap with a hammer and it went right on and off. No problems!!

I have read that a 1-5/8 can be made into the tool if you want to take the time to cut the notches out But the 1-11/16 did the job for me without that hastle.

Tom

Is this what you are looking for? Not sure we are talking about the same socket.

No Tom, that's the Honda special tool for the pre-load adjustment nut (which we determined some time ago works on both ST1100s and ST1300s). We're looking for the size of the ST1300s' top stem nut (see poSTs 24 and 25 above).

Picked up a 28mm and it's too small; fits the hole alright, but won't go down onto
the nut. Gonna trade up to a 30mm if I can find one; I think that's the right size.
I may also grab 1 1/4" to see how that fits.

I still can't believe nobody knows the size of that nut ..

OK, after doing some web searching, I came up with a short conversion table for
metric sockets to SAE sockets:

5/16 & 8mm
7/16 & 11mm
9/16 & 14mm
5/8 & 16mm
3/4 & 19mm
7/8 & 22mm
15/16 & 24mm
1 1/16 & 27mm
1 1/4 & 32mm

What I did was to buy a 1 3/16" socket, judging that the stem nut
was just a tad bigger than my 29mm .. and also considering Rob's
post that his 30mm socket was larger than the nut.

Bottom line: It fits the nut very well. I suspect that Rob just had a thick-walled
socket that wouldn't insert down into his Motorcycle Larry's riser plate hole,
which is what I have on mine as well. I do think the nut is 30mm.

So, for a 2007 ST1300 stem nut, you may use a one and three sixteenths
( 1 3/16") socket just fine .. and I suspect the 30mm socket as well IF
you're not using Motorcycle Larry's riser plate.

If you want to borrow a 30mm I have one, the socket wall doesn't come close to the riser. It slides over the nut and is too big. Today I dug out the micrometer and measured the nut it's 1.141" on an '06.

28mm = 1.102"
29mm = 1.142"
30mm = 1.181"

Did you say you have a 29mm or a 28mm?

BTW: Keep in mine there are some phreaky sizes on this bike. i.e. The washers for the cylinder coolant drain plugs are 6.5mm.

Yeah, I had a 29mm .. and it just began to fit over the nut, but wouldn't
completely go onto it. By rotating the socket on the nut, you could feel
the corners click into the indents, but it was just too small. We may, in
fact, have different sized hardware on these bikes; I'll have to get over
there and compare.

Anyway, I traded my 29mm back to Autozone for the 1 3/16" socket, so
I no longer have it. Got $1.15 refund, too .. which begs the question:

Why do metric sockets cost a little more, even when they're a tad smaller?
Same manufacturer, same finish ..
