Tapping PIAA 910's to the high beam relay

It depends on where you're going to put the relay a little bit. I actually ordered some connectors from http://www.easternbeaver.com and made a pigtail for one of the headlamps and when I crimped the connector pin for the highbeam I crimped in an extra wire. Then I used the wire to trigger my relay.

So the switch for the PIAA's is activated when I go to my brights then I have the option to have the PIAA's on or off.

I've posted some pics of it. It works great. I used a posi-lock to attach it to the trigger wire for the relay.

In case this helps:

Hi, Curt:

Thanks for commenting. I read your article very carefully before I bought the 910s and Seng mounts. Very well thought through.

My PIAA relay is under the rider's seat, along with a bunch of other stuff. I temporarily have the white, PIAA relay wire, connected to a switched wire close by the high beam relay. What I am about to do is pull the left-side plastic that the grab handle slides through, then tap with a ScotchLock into the blue wire that goes from the headlights to the high beam relay. The blue wire is the 'hot' wire. I may try the blue/black wire to see if that is the high beam relay's trigger wire. I'd prefer to tap into the trigger's power.

The high beam relay and wires are so close to where I have the PIAA relay it seems like a natural fit. Wiring that way will accomplish what you described: low beams on, 910s are off. High beams on, choice of 910s off or on.

I took a ride tonight as I just got the plastic back on this afternoon. The 910s are very nice. Not the "flame throwers" that I'd expected, but very nice. Hmmm: 85 watts each; 110 watts each. Hmmm. Just foolin?. I?d go with fog lights next.

Cheers,

Marshal

Hey Marshall,

Looks like you have it under control. I don't like the Scotchlocks but to each his own.

Curt/Al:

I have located the trigger wire for the headlight high beams. It's the Blue/Black wire as I suspected.

All one needs to do to access this wire is pull the left-side plastic that the grab handle slides through, pop from its mount the fuse box closest to you, and there it is, off to the right. You may have to crouch to see it. The Blue wire is there, too, so be careful that you get the Blue wire with the Black stripe instead. No need to make pig-tails or pass the white wire to the headlight. Neat.

You can run a second set of lights (fogs, etc.) using the low-beam trigger. That is the White/Black wire. Look carefully as the black stripe is very thin. To locate that wire, look in the same general areea as the Blue/Black wire, but look more to the left. The low-beam realy is left of the high-beam relay.

Hey, quick question:

I'm assuming this fit and worked just fine on the ST, but I figured I had better not assume and just ask. So.

Does this fit and work on the ST1300? Heh.

thanks,

david/foilrat
Hi David,
The answer is; Yes!
The clutch and brake fluid reservoir's are the same type used for the Honda Goldwings. The fit is perfect. It doesn't matter which side you purchase a unit for either.
