The Great River Road

Sitting about a mile from the River Road, as I knew it growing up (Minnesota) . I was well into my adulthood before I knew it was a thing. I have given some thought to a similar trip.

Your trip will give me both entertainment and food for thought. Thank you.

That's the town I grew up in (Keokuk) and that's the house my sister and brother-in-law used to live.
You didn't post any pics, but I bet you came through Muscatine, and probably rode just under my house near the world's largest Watermelon statue.
That's amazing - what a house! Yes I did pass right through the 'outskirts' of Muscatine but I don't remember seeing a Watermelon statue. I took 92 into town and then X61 out of town. I take tons of pictures then I wade through them to figure out the ones I want to use. I took close to 700 on this trip alone.

That was the bridge you came across. If you stuck to the river road through Muscatine, this was between the road and the river. It would have been difficult to stop on the road at that point. My house is on the bluff 1-2 blocks before then.

I reckon I must have been looking the other way to miss something that big!

I went back and looked at my route. I was running the road on the west side of the river so I didn't cross the bridge. I was running 22 from Davenport then turned on to 38/92 at Muscatine. Looking at my route and Google Earth I did run right by it but I was probably looking ahead instead of to my left.

Thanks for the ridealong, Phil. I don’t know when you passed by but you were apparently within a mile of Cassa Oosterhuis.

Warm Regards, John
John - I thought about giving you ring but the last time my call appeared as a 'junk' call so I figured it would probably do the same thing.

I finally finished my write up of my run down the Great River Road from Lake Itasca, MN to the 'End Of The Line' in Louisiana. Hope you enjoy it!
Is it possible this is the same bridge? This crossing was on CR 7. The year was 2007, and I was riding west. I rode the River Road through Wisconsin, then did something else. I was throwing the rock on the south side of the road, and the bridge pic was taken on the north. It appears yours was also on the north side? I dunno, the landscape is different, perhaps the state cut the tree line back or flood waters did something. Stuff changes after 19 years, check your notes. The road in my pic bends left, not so in yours, but it wouldn't be the first time the state cleared land to take out a dangerous curve.

Later, I scrolled down and found your second pic. Your view is further back from the bridge. Heck, it appears to be the same sign. If it is the same place they cleaered the treeline, to take some of the bend out of the curve.

I've done a quick scan of your write up. I will take the time to read further. You rode within a couple hundred yards of my house, and most likely rode right past my place of business!! Gosh ... I'd have happily sat down and had a sweet tea or coffee with you my friend.

We'll chat more about this in a couple weeks :thumb:

I remember passing a vet place in Clinton so that had to be yours.
My 'synapses' didn't 'synapse' to make the connection! ;)

Picture 70 was a different crossing than 72 but 72 looks like a match to your pictures.

I'm still reading parts of the trip Phil. But I'll agree that stretch of street where you had both mirror covers pop off, from Transylvania to Tallulah is really too rough to ride. You can't ride it a 55 HAHA. I've given it up and now take the east side of the river now. M i s s i........you know....

Yeah, I figured 55 was not gonna work after that - I am a little slow sometimes to catch on ... ;)
