are actually called ankernuts. however googling this fails miserably as a source of information on where i can purchase these things. can anyone help? (uk preferably)

just tried the rivetwise website, gave them a call and they said they can do them at a minimum of 10 each, and it would work out to ?26.50!!!! (i need some larger ones for a couple of the holes, the PO damaged them I think.

Ask your favorite local aircraft maintenance facility about "Rivnuts." I have them in about 6 sizes from 6-32 to 5/16x18. It does take a special tool to squeeze them in and set them. Look for a hangar with motorcycles in the parking lot.

I wouldn't do that. The OEM rubber "wellnuts" are designed to break free in the case of a collision. Rivnuts would not work the same. They would also cause a lot of stress on the plastic.
