They Killed my ST-1300

Tonight I got rear ended as I sat at a red light. My 2007 ST 1300 is totaled, and I am in the hospital. Probably nothing serious but people should get checked out when something like this happens.

The good news is I didn't just spend over $1000 having the brake system cleaned and adjusted!

Yeah, I did look behind me for the first several seconds I sat at that intersection but I don't think I looked behind me for the next few seconds as that truck approached. I think the light had just turned from red to green and I was beginning to let the clutch out to go forward when I got hit --that means the guy came up on me from the rear while my brake light was on nearly all of the time that he was closing the distance and my bike also had two extra red tail lights that I installed earlier this year, and both of them were on and working at the time!

Plus I was wearing a red helmet with 3M reflective safety tape on it, and wearing a red safety vest criss-crossed with reflective stripes.

That last pic was taken earlier on Sunday when I was participating in a Christmas toy run. Same gear that I was wearing later that night when I got hit.

YOUCH. First and foremost, glad you're more-or-less okay. I hope you don't discover insidious lingering effects later on.

Second: not that there's anything you can do about it, or that it will change anything, but the driver who caused it must either have been distracted / inattentive, drunk, or both. Whatever the case I hope he gets significant and appropriate penalties.
 
Hope you come out of it physically fine and can find another ST1300 if that is what you are looking for.
I understand - as you are taking off your eyes are usually forward not backward.
That exact thing - getting tagged from behind - is one of my biggest concerns riding these days.
A lot of drivers are not paying attention at all - even though you have flashing lights, reflective stuff etc.
I have an emergency vehicle flasher on all of my ST1100s that lights up when I touch the brakes.
That stuff helps a lot - if the driver is paying attention.
Sadly many of them are not.
 
Being hit from behind can be really ugly for the rider. Glad to hear you survived.
Sadly, the insurance companies are not known for replacing bikes, but there are lots of variables.
I hope you're made whole and can get a nice replacement. You may have to fight for it.
 
My God! How fast was he going and hard did he hit you? Hard enough to rip the muffler off, that must have been a hard impact.

One thing that I strongly suggest, based on my experience of having been in a serious accident with multiple injuries, is to be aware of and seek medical attention immediately for any little pain or discomfort that you feel as soon as you feel it if for no other reason but to have it medically recorded in case it develops in to a more serious situation. Some injuries might only manifest themselves in a noticeable way surprisingly long after the initial impact. If to much time has lapsed between when the accident happened and when the injury is reported serves to give the insurance company an excuse to claim that it is unrelated to the accident.

Big Ouch, good to hear you are alive, as everyone else has said bikes can be replaced. Hopefully you have a good Lawyer to Sue the idiot. Heal fast. G
