Thinking of getting a Silver Wing

I know one other forum member here has a big scooter.

I am really thinking about that Silver wing 650. Would be a great get around, can wiggle through traffic better than the ST, and the idea of farkle-laden nano-wing is kinda fun.

First thing is a custom seat, and a GPS.

Anyone else ever considered one of these? :scared2:

dond has one and seems to like it a lot, I've never compared the two so I'm not speaking from experience or anything.. just talking to talk ..LOL

Bored at werk too, huh? :)

I have looked at the Yamaha Majesty, the Honda SW, and the Burgmann.

I actually like the Yamaha, but it only comes in 250cc.

A 400cc would probably do the trick. But 250cc is just too small for me, and all the gear I plan on cramming in that underseat trunk.

So the Honda is likely to be it. If I saw a used Burgmann for cheap I'd consider it. See if I like the scooter side of things and all.

I know they are called scooters... BUT, a 600 or 650 'scooter' can kick some serious booty on the twisties.. I have seen that so as far as I'm concerned they are just another motorcycle, scooter doesn't work.

Buck,

A good friend who had never ridden took the msf course and mentioned having to learn clutch/gas/shifter interaction. My one brain cell fired and I suggested he look at an SW. He bought it and rides it everywhere in San Diego (including Palomar mountain following me). It kept up fine in the twisties.
There is another guy in the Denver area who bought one when he decided the ST1100 was too much. I followed Whit after he rode it from Denver to San Luis Obispo (he had a fuel cell made). I kept up fine.. :D

DonD had an ST1300 and moved to the Burgman and has only good things to report.

One hint... you'll have a little initial trouble keeping your hand off the left brake... so do some parking lot stuff before you ride it on the street or you'll 'clutch' the brake when stopping...

And remember Honda is going to be releasing a 900cc scooter too!!!
I would love to see the look on a sportbiker's face as one of those heads up hwy 2 to Newcomb's ranch.

Burgies rock..My longest day so far has been 550 miles, 8 hrs flat.
My hips were giving me fits with the ST riding position but now I have zero discomfort.

'06 AN650
5000 miles
Corbin seat
Steble horn
CV screen
Escort RD
XM radio
CB
Givi 46
Heated BMW grips
Race Tech fork emulators and springs
etc

Lowest mpg=44
Highest mpg=72! yes..that's correct 72.

Avg day to day mpg =48
Avg OTR mpg = 51

I didn't mean to appear to bash your Bergie Dond, I was just saying that I like the fit and finish on the other bikes "better" than the Suzuki. :)

Yeah, I do like the riding position! It's more like a car, and seems like it would be more comfortable. I have seen people on big scooters in the interstellar distances between the bay area, and LA. :)

I do like the top loading large compartment. I have to carry LOTS of computer stuff on this new job, but I just can't bring myself to buy a car.

The big scooter option looks promising.

You don't need another bike, Chris!!

:)

Are you thinking about *replacing* the ST or in addition to it?

<D>

Hey, you can say that again! I showed some guys that a 450, or was it a 400 cc, scooter can ROCK. I passed one guy that was on a crocth rocket in the mountain twisties, then started over taking another guy going around a corner on the inside lane. I only backed out cuz I was a wee concerned he might not see me and start to drift over. After that, everyone wanted to try that scoot.

The trick was to go into the corners with the throttle still HOT, use the brake, but make sure the throttle is still getting lots of gas, this keeps the RPM's up, then when the brake is released, the engine is revved and ready to shoot out of the turn.

The thing that I don't like about the Silver Wing is the gas mileage, not any better than the ST (just one review that I read, so take it for what it is worth). Instead, the 250 gets some serious gas mileage, but might be pushing the RPM's on the freeway.

I have a good friend that has a Silver Wing, and I can tell you it is very nice. And I have ridden a ways with Witt, he has no problem keeping up, I can tell you that.

My riding buddy bought a 650 Bergman, and I am here to tell you that it will do the Boogaloo. I have gotten to watch him pass several cruiser types in the serious twisties...and when he's really flogging it, it seem positively quick:)

Oh, no no. This is in addition. I need something with good size top loading luggage for this new job.

I don't have that FZ6, or VTX anymore. :)

Buck:

I test rode the SW and Reflex last year. My wife was thinking of getting one of those. We bought the Reflex but sold it within the season. The SW is a blast. Lots of fun. In some circumstances maybe even more than the ST. The Reflex has a poor rear suspension. The issue with a scooter if you keep the ST is the clutch / brake coordination. On a bike you always clutch as you break. Not so on a scooter. If you catch the throttle as you try to break, this can be a problem as you are not clutching. Pesonnally, I didn't like the transition back and forth bike-scooter. However, if you can get used to it, the SW is a great buy. Go for it.

One of the things things drew this Honda rider to the Suzuki was the fit and finish, build quality. The ECVT is unique to the scooter world, fully computer controlled and no belt every 16,000 miles..or ever. The engine/trans is in the conventional motorcycle location and does not ride up and down with the swingarm resulting in huge unspring weight. Add a 500w alternator, excellent lighting and many other features, the "S" comes out on top. I did a lot of research.

Whatever you do, have fun and GO RIDE

Well I had a reflex 250 cc Honda scooter. It was nice and verry comfortable. 65 to 70 mphs was its top speed. I under stand the Silver Wing has a top speed of a little better than 100 mph. Wich is good for hwy riding and for two up.

The big scooters are great but they have a lack of positive energy if you know what I mean! It was just hard for me to be a proud owner of a scooter. :eek:illeak1: If that kind of thing is cool with you get it. It's a great ride I am sure!

My wife has a SW and loves it. Hand arthritis forced her to give up a bike with a clutch. The SW has a large luggage area and she often goes grocery shopping with the bike.

It's not my first bike of choice out of my garage, but every single time I take it I have loads of fun and come back smiling! It's even more fun since I put a Stebel in it!!!! It takes me about an eighth mile to remember I don't have to do anything with my feet except put one down on the tarmac when coming to a stop!

It will run with everyone else on the freeway and windscreen protection is good in the rain.

The Suzuki is just as nice. Technically, it is 650cc. and the Honda is 600cc. but I don't think there is any practical difference. See if you can test ride each. Either would make a great second bike!

I traded the Silverwing and Roadstar in when I got the ST. The Silverwing is a great scoot. Wish I still had it. MUCH trunk room, fun to run errands with and it can be a serious bike. Top end around 120, a friend was riding my silverwing and I was on the roadstar. Hit the rev limiter in 1st, 2nd and 3rd and he was still pulling away. Lead a ride in the Texas Hill country and everyone asked me to slow down. Took it on vacation from south Texas to the New Mexico/Colo border for a week, no problems at altitude. Did a SS1000 and a Border to Border ride on it. All with stock seat! Did get a larger windshield that helped with back pressure.
