Those little plastic fastener thingies. . . .

GDI

This is probably the dumbest question!

Does anybody have a good source or possibly an effective replacement for those little black plastic fasteners that are used to fasten the body panels together? I mean the ones with an outer plastic bushing with an inner screw-like piece that wedges in there to keep them in place. There are several in the gray plastic cover over the handlebars, where the fairing trim strip meets the lower cowling, where the side cowling meets the back trim over the rear wheel, etc.

I've tried to order them online, and I haven't gotten anything that matches. The ones that I got were one piece with plastic fins that were not nearly as effective, despite coming in OEM Honda packaging and being quite expensive. . . .

Does NAPA or someplace like that have something similar and possibly better?

thanks all,

GDI

Our local Ace Hardware has a decent supply of metric fasteners and some of the plastic "thingies". It's worth a shot if you have one near by....

Auto parts in the interior trim parts bins might have something.
Some have used well nuts for a few locations.

Or check out the Turbo Encabulator Master Tech's advice although he has a left handed metric adjustable wrench he uses on his fasteners :D

Hi Jim,

Forget about replacing the Side Cover/Seat Cowling fasteners... not needed. I lost one of those in '94 and threw the other one into the junk drawer soon after. The one on the Middle Fairing behind the Maintenance Cover can be replaced with one of the 5mm Nut Clip-n-Truss Screws combos used in a number of other places on the ST1100. My 91 doesn't have the same Handlebar Cover as yours with the plastic screws, but I'll bet you could find a substitute at AutoZone. I recently picked up some there for the plastic shrouding behind the bumper on my cage. JMO

He's asking about ST1100 fasteners, Rod. They have a phillips head screw and fit flush, don't protrude like the push-pin type used on the ST1300. Well... actually there are two of the push-pins on the ST11 - secure the lower ends of the Middle Fairing Inner Cover to the Middle Fairing in front of the radiator.

Yea, John... I was wondering. Went to his info and couldn't find bike info. Thanks,
Rod

Yeah, sometimes it's hard to figure ST11... ST13 when folks don't put it in the subject line or the body of the poST, etc. - but he asked in the ST1100 Tech forum so.... :)

John,
Thanks... Looking at the "Home Forum" is not one of those things I do on a regular basis. This may be the thread that teaches me the benefits of doing so!!:hat1:

Yeah, I've got a 2000 ST1100. Yes, exactly! I meant the ones with the phillips head. I'm not sure why I didn't put that in my first post--that may have prevented some confusion.

I've seen those pushpins somewhere (California Sport Touring?), but they don't look like what I need--though they may work anyway? I ordered a pack of wellnuts from them a few years ago thinking they were these plastic fasteners. . . . There wasn't a good picture on the website at the time. Anyway, I've got lots of those, but haven't figured out a way to make them replace the plastic fasteners.

I've been "recycling" a few of the remaining fasteners from various locations. Like you said, the ones that attach the side cowlings to the seat cowling in back really aren't needed. Some of the others are a little more important, functionally. Did Honda stop making them?

Maybe I'll take one of the old plastic fasteners that I have and stop in at Autozone. I drive past one on my way to/from work every day.

thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim. I see Rob poSTed while I looked in my archives and confirmed the PNs are available from Service Honda:

90683-GR1-003 / CLIP, BODY COVER [phillips head plastic clip]
[edit: Service Honda says that this is also the part for your Handlebar Cover]

This combo works as a substitute for the one behind the Maintenance Cover:
90109-SB6-000 / SCREW, TRUSS (5X16)
90312-MT3-000 / NUT, CLIP (5MM)

Middle Fairing Inner Cover push pin: 90657-SB0-003 / CLIP, SPLASH SHIELD

HTH

For the ST1300 there are actually four different kinds.

91549-MW0-790ZA Clip, panel - used on lower cowl

S0657-SB0-003 Clip, splash -

90116-MCS-G00 Rivet, push - the most common type on the ST

90116-SP0-003 Clip, Bumper Seal

Very confusing. Pay careful attention to the one you want to replace.

I got some from Ron Ayers; fast delivery.

John-

Is this the part number you ordered? 90683-GR1-003

Cheeses, I don't remember now. It was last year.

I think I ordered them from BikeBandit maybe? When I got a part that didn't match what was on my bike, it left me wondering if the original part had been discontinued--leaving me with what they had sent in its place. I mean it did fit, more or less, and sort of work. From what you guys are saying that was probably a bad assumption on my part. I should have figured they sent me the wrong part!

I think that I've already replaced the ones behind the maintenance cover with the truss head screw and nut clip. I bought the bike with less than 12,000 miles on it, though I am the third owner. I think it may have been in a mild tip-over (right side), before I got it. Also has/had some farkles added, so there was evidence that she had her plastics off. I thought that the fastener under the maintenance cover had just been lost by a careless mechanic. . . . There were lots of screws missing, and some cross-threaded, etc. :(

Right now I'm doing a valve-check, and I'm replacing the steering-head bearings. I've got a little over 32,000 miles on it. Handling hasn't been very good since I replaced the front tire w/ Avon Storm tire last year. This is my second Avon as the first was warrantied by Southwest Moto Tire. I don't know that the bearings are bad. I suspect that the preload is probably too light, but figured I may as well go with tapered bearings from CBR if I'm going to go to the trouble of swapping them out.

Thanks for the part numbers. I haven't ordered from Service Honda in the past, but maybe that will be the thing to do going forward. Bike Bandit doesn't stock anything themselves anyway, right? I'm guessing that there are other vendors that are faster and cheaper--though Bike Bandit is pretty convenient.

When it comes down to it, those phillips head, plastic fasteners kind of suck! They go in fine and hold OK. I have a lot of trouble when it's time to remove them, though. The heads strips out and they won't unscrew far enough to release tension so that they can be removed without damage. Well that's my experience, anyway.

Jim

Jim, if you mung up the phillips head slots, just find a metal sheet-metal or similar screw to replace it.

Do you want to borrow the STOC ST1100/ST1300 Steering Stem Races/Bearings R&R Tool Kit? linky (must register to read). Or valve shim kit (same forum)?

+1 on Bike Bandit. Proprietary/non-Honda part numbers and always much higher than other online sources.

I don't think that I'll need either of those kits at this time.

I checked the valves at 16,000 miles. One was tight, and I couldn't get the size that was required at the dealer I was at that day. I ended up getting another size that let me swap shims with a different valve for a three way trade--the end result being that both valves were in the middle of their ranges. I really doubt that any of them will need changing.

I've got quite a few tools, so I think I'll be able to do the steering-head bearing swap myself. I've also got a metal lathe here, so will make a spacer, driver or whatever I should need if that would be necessary.

I did go over there and register today, though!

I see you make it up to Mt. Horeb on occassion from some other threads, John. I lived in Mt. Horeb for 13 years. We're outside of town now, but we're still in the same school district. Maybe I'll see you around? I'm thinking of hitting the Slimey Crud Run this year.

Jim

You can make your own tools, Jim... cool! Check out the races press tool Martin Belef made for STOC in my link above.

I was at the Mt. Horeb RTE last year. Planning on this spring's Slimey Crud Run. I'll be the only 1991 Sparkling Silver Metallic ST1100 in Leland, once again. :)
