Throttlemeister versus Brakeaway...

I've read all the threads and product websites/videos on both of these as well as other cruise controls.

The only thing keeping me from the Throttlemeister solution is the engagement and disengagement process. From what I understand, one has to engage and disengage this device using the left hand. Am I missing something here?

(I only want a safe throttle lock for a short period of time (3min/use) to rest my hand). Safety is more important than price for me - Vista and "O" rings I'll pass on.

Throttlmeister is operated with the thottle hand (Right hand)....easy to engage and easy to disengage....I just grab the grip and thottlmeister bar end at the same time and roll off the throttle.....disengaged...easy...

And the thottle can still be moved to accel/decel....it's more like throttle "Friction" than a throttle "Lock"

I, personallly, found the 'meister a pain in the butt to operate. YMMV.

+1

I would use a simple throttle lock like on my old VFR much more than I use the Throttlemeister.

If you need to see one on the bike we could set something up.

+1 I just couldn't get the hang of turning it off in a hurry. I know I was able to roll off the throttle if I had to, but in a panic stop situation I will still downshift and the TM got in my way.

I found the Vista Cruise very nice to use and removed it only 'cause it was too ugly. I rarely had trouble snapping it off in a hurry.

Brake-Away is a pleasure. I love the way it snaps off with the brake. Thumb controlls work nice. It looks nice if you're willing to take the time during install(I cut the inside lip off my grip to get it closer to the switch box and give me more hand room) But at that price - next time I'll just go full electric cruise.

I have been using the breakaway for a few years. Both on a cruiser and on the st. In fact when I got my st that was the first thing I added. Great addition to any bike, the only thing better would be a electronic cruise control.

Pros:
1. Sets very easy with a push of the thumb.
2. Friction control on throttle even when set.
3. Releases easy with either push of the thumb or pulling of the brake lever.
4. It is a well machined and impresive piece of hardware.
5. Looks great.

Cons:
1. Will take a little time to install and setup.
2. Takes up about a 1/2" of grip real estate.
3. Cost more.
4. Some grip heaters may not work with the breakaway.

Thanks for all the feedback. After reviewing the comments and a discussion with the tech at Brakeaway, I purchased the Brakeaway device.

With the substantial engine compression braking on the ST1300, I don't want to mess around trying to twist on/twist off a throttle lock device when going 65 mph. While more expensive, for me I believe the Brakeaway throttle lock device will be a safer option.

I know that it is cheaper to purchase a real cruise control device, but I feel uncomfortable strapping an aftermarket cruise control to a bike with as much power as an ST.

One thing I should note is that if you have heated grips depending upon your wire outlet you may or may not be able to install the breakaway.

I have the symtec heater and have made my breakaway installation to work with this type of grip heater. The honda grip heater may not work.

Good luck with the Breakaway. I had one for several years on my VTX. It is a high quality unit, well made and well designed. But.... adjusting it can be a PITA. It's like trying to fine tune a Swiss watch sometimes. I also didnt like how the metal would expand and contract with the temp, changing the resistance level. All in all, to me it wasnt worth all the hassle and tinkering. I hope you have better success with yours.

I have a Breakaway and I love it. Set your speed, press the button with your thumb, and you're set.

Quote from gregj - "But.... adjusting it can be a PITA." I've never had to adjust it.

This is my setup with the Kimpex grip heaters (I think they're called Symtec in other markets).

I like my Throttlemeister but I have had nothing to compare it to except BMW's friction screw type. I like being able to adjust it from 0 to 100% friction with a finger twist on the fly and often set about 40% friction on long days so it doesn't take as much effort to hold the throttle yet it isn't locked.

After all is said and done, buy what you like, and ride with what you need!
I've had my TM for over a year and love it, once you get the hang of engaging it.

I had the TM and never really liked how it worked. Tried to adjust to it but for me it just wasn't as natural. So, I gave the breakaway a try and really like it. I had a vista cruise on my last ST and that worked just fine, plus a lot cheaper then the TM or BA.

FWIW:

The folks at throttlemeister sent me the video below to demonstrate how to set the unit when traveling 65mph on the highway:

http://www.rlmotorcycles.com/tm-works.mpeg

I'm too focused on my surroundings to work the Throttlemeister unit.

The video makes it look more involved than it really is.... Setting the throttle only requires I use my little finger and edge of my palm without disruption in the grasp on the throttle. I don't need to move my hand like is shown in the video, and I usually set mine where it will hold the throttle but I can easily adjust for change in road conditions.
Releasing the unit is a no brainer,

A friend makes a "Ring" that you attach to the throttlemiester... It looks sort of like a "Sprocket" that makes it 119.7% easier to roll the throttle Miester on and off as it allows "Grip" with your gloves... It installs in like 1 minute,,, and I can try and post a picture if you are interested... I think the price is $20,,, and I own 1,,, and would never use a Throttle Miester without 1,,, I like it that much...

A Farkle,,, for your Farkle,,, and super well made too... Win/Win... :D
