Time to do the alternator?? 1991 ST1100

, I don't think I'd need the alternator shaft if I ever need to use the spare part, right?

If so, then I'd be willing to let go of the alternator shaft for someone to use on a 28A upgrade.
You don’t need the base plate, shaft and gear for and alternator replacement on a 40 amp bike. The base assembly stays in place and you split them apart.

OK, I've been reading a few posts here that keep mentioning the alternator shaft, and was wondering about that part.

When I parted out the '98, I just pulled the alternator out of the engine block, without reading the Honda manual.

Now, I looked at the manual and see I was supposed to rotate the alternator clockwise and insert an 8mm bolt to retain the shaft in the engine.

Since I didn't do that, and presumably have the entire alternator with shaft attached as a spare part, how hard will it be with it off of the engine to rotate and remove the shaft?

I don't have the part in front of me, but from the diagram in the manual it looks like there's a plate with the same 3-bolt pattern as the alternator, that rotates and then the shaft will come out of the alternator?

The reason I ask is since I have a '97, and am keeping the alternator as a potential replacement part, I don't think I'd need the alternator shaft if I ever need to use the spare part, right?

If so, then I'd be willing to let go of the alternator shaft for someone to use on a 28A upgrade.
Hi dwalby, hope all is well. I find myself preparing for the 40A upgrade and am in need for the alternator shaft. If you'd like to coordinate, I'd be happy to work with you to receive the part.
Thanks,
Jonny

Possibly.

Mark, the starter of this thread, was a day or two earlier on the request queue, but I'm not sure what he's going to do yet about his alternator upgrade. Since he was first in line I am going to work with him first. If he decides he's not going to go through with the alternator repair then I would have the parts you need.

From what I can tell you've been more aggressive in procuring parts off the Internet, so it may be that by the time he sorts everything out you'll already have the parts you need, which is a good thing anyway.

If possible, can you give me the exact length on the damper shaft, 13411-MAJ-G20? I'm trying to have a machinist make a new shaft from the old 28-amp shaft, to fit the newer 40-amp alternator and its splines. Then a possible CNC print to make more. Or anyone in the ST group that may know that exact length. Thank you!

I need to look around in my parts boxes to see if I even have that part after all. I have the feeling that after I removed the alternator from the engine block that I may have left the shaft and base plate still attached to the engine, I don't recall. If I can find it I'll get back to you.
