Hey gang,

I don’t know if my timing belt and water pump have ever been changed/serviced by the previous owner.

Where are you sourcing parts? Is there a rebuild kit for the water pump?

Let me know, and send links if you can!

Thanks!!

You can source parts from Partzilla, there was a company that sold rebuild kits for the water pump, however, they are no longer in business. You can source the required bearings and seals with the assistance of Google. Some of which are available at tractor supply outlets.
Timing belts are getting rare, I believe OEM is still available, a couple of weeks ago they were $175 Canadian. Gates T325 may be the replacement, but double check that number

EDIT! apparently there's another company that sells the water pump kit, see post #3.
HappyBikes out of Britain was where I got my kit from a number of years ago for about half the price. ;)

Last word I heard Gates has quit making the ST1100 timing belt.
I would not worry about the age but the miles.
If you've got less than 100,000 miles on the engine I would not sweat the belt.
The water pump and pulleys can be another issue altogether.
But if you are in there for the pump might as well do the belt and pulleys also.

I have 129,722 miles on her now ☹️. I have no reason to believe she NEEDS a timing belt and water pump now, but just trying to plan ahead.

Did you have her at 100,000 or was that the PO?
Honda says change the belt at 90,000 but I always wait until 100,000 and the belt still looks like new.
If you are going to keep the bike, I would buy the belt, the pulleys and either a new water pump or bearing kit to have on hand.
FWIW, I lost a waterpump on one of mine at 130,000 which grenaded the engine.
I had one head south at 140,000 with a bad leak.
So I am now in the camp of changing the water pump and bearings when you change the belt to err on the side of caution. ;)
But I do have one with 191,000+ miles on it with the original water pump and bearings.

Bike looks beautiful. Glad you brought it back to life. Good luck with sourcing the parts.

I think I bought her at 119,000 in 2022. Previous owner kept good records and is a Honda mechanic by trade. But I don’t see a record of doing the timing belt and water pump. I think I’ll start sourcing the parts now. Maybe get a used water pump and rebuild it; get it ready to go.

You are mine of real world, warts-and-all wisdom UP.

Jus curious, how did the waterpump failure grenade an engine? Did it cause the belt to fail/jump timing?
I was headed for the Newfoundland ferry when it all went down -

I don't know if the water pump failed or the pulleys failed but the engine jumped time and bent the valves.
Zero compression as a result as I coasted to a stop.
Then anti-freeze started running down the front and the engine turned over really quickly ... ;)
The interesting part I found when I pulled the front off the engine when I got her home was that the timing belt was still intact.
It did not break when the engine bent the valves which is pretty amazing to me.

If you can, I would contact him and ask since he is a Honda mechanic.
But I would get all the bits and pieces as you will need to do it sooner or later if you keep the bike.

I had to order a belt from Germany after waiting fornever on a Gates one from Amazon. I'm nowhere near 100k on my 2000 bike but 25+ years is a long time for any belt IMO.

It's still en route.

FWIW, I had close to that many years on mine and they still look good as new ... ;)
It is not the belt that will get you because of age, it will be the water pump or the pulleys!

Not disagreeing, just peace of mind. And with this thread I'll prob start gathering the other bits. I've 40k on my odo but my engine has paint markings that tell me it's not the original. So who knows...peace of mind.

You've got to do what you are comfortable with.
But since 1997, I have only heard of one ST1100 timing belt supposedly breaking.
When I quizzed the one who said it (as I was really interested in the circumstances) all I got was 'crickets' and they sort of disappeared.
As I have said before, when my 02 grenaded (bent valves, etc.) from a failed water pump and/or pulleys the timing belt never broke.
If something was gonna break one, I figured that would be it. ;)

I just pulled the belt of my 93 ST, it was replaced 16 years ago at around 95.000 km, bike has done 130.000 now, i only replaced it as a piece of mind, and to check the waterpump and pulleys, belt looked like new, and no visible wear, it was an OEM Honda belt, the writing was still visible.

Waterpump and pulleys was also still in good shape, no noises or movement in any of the parts.

There is no doubt those stock belts are tough.
