Tire shelf life

20 years ago: Race tires, if they don't become shredded first, will go bad because of heat cycles. You can tell because the rubber starts feeling like charcoal or chalk instead of like rubber. I don't know if the compounds they use now behave differently.

Dirt tires definitely do not last 10 years. They get that odd texture and turn hard and start to chunk before that. I just threw away a pair of lightly used 6 year old knobbies for that reason.
