I was riding last night and noticed the right fairing insert was kind of loose. When I got home I checked it and noticed that the trim clip was broken. (Last night I was just calling them thingy's now I have looked in my HRCA online manual, because I don't have a printed service manual yet and found them to be called Trim Clips.)

So is there a better device to use and if not is Honda the only source for Trim Clips?

Also still learning ST-Owners layout... is there a better forum for this type of question... if so please feel free to let me know and/or reclassify this post.

Thanks,
galenb

The trim clips (I usually call them push rivets or something to that effect) are expensive from Mother Honda. Many have found a similar, although not identical, fastener at Lowe's and/or Home Depot that are just as effective and much cheaper.

auto parts stores also offer alternatives. The ones at autozone are acutually a screw in type which are easier to install and remove and are more secure.

+1 on the AutoZone look-alikes. The screw-in version works great! ...By the way, they're properly referred to as 'doohickeys' :chrfl1:

Most appropriate forum would be 1300 tech. Click home, then forums for a complete list.

If a moderator gets picky, he'll change it for ya. :D

I had the same problem. My solution, which has worked great for ~ 1000 miles, was to use a faucet washer, automotive trim clip underneath, and appropriate size screw. Tightening the screw to exert slight pressure on the washer creates friction which keeps the plastic piece in place despite the broken pin.

A couple of days ago, I was visiting my son in Des Moines. He is a devoted Harley rider. When getting ready to leave, my son is messing with my bike, feeling, inspecting, etc. He lifted up on one of those couplings and it just came off. The push pin had broken again. A very weak point on the ST.

Anyway, I've not been able to live that one down. I noticed when I got to the first fuel stop that he had attached a roll of duct tapt to my luggage rack. I'll hear about that little incident for many years to come.

I will be checking that Auto zone rivet.:03biker: :03biker:
:crackup :crackup :crackup

on the subject of where to post, I'm starting to think this site is TOO big, so many areas to post.

If you post in here you get replies, where it belongs it lies stagnant.

Thanks for all the great suggestions... Right now I put the broken part in the hole and "twisted" some duct tape around the back. Tomorrow, Saturday, I will head to the auto parts store and hardware store and see what I can find. I'll let you know how that turns out.

I've also noticed that posting in certain areas you don't get any response but post in the General and you get a lot of help and Lord konws I can use a lot of help.

I also thought that technical might contain information on bleeding the brakes or checking the valves... Plastic thingy's that I fixed with duct tape, not so techy but necessary.

When I had my plastic off, I measured them. The longer thin ones that push in plush are 6mm and the fatter short ones that stick out a bit are 8mm. I think the screw type would be fine if the diameter is correct. These sizes are the hole size.

Someone on this forum pointed me to Accura world which uses the same parts numbers. The $2.50 push rivet was .67! The larger one is more expensive but still cheaper. I wanted to have spares as I am taking the fairning off soon and know I will have issues :)
go here:

and search on these part numbers.

90116-MCS-G00 Honda Push Rivet $0.62
90657-SBO-003 Splash Clip, Honda $1.77

There are actually 4 sizes of trim clips for the fairing:

Honda Pt# 90657-SB0-003 Clip, Splash
Honda Pt# 90116-MCS-G00 Rivet, Push
Honda Pt# 91549-MW0-790ZA Clip, "NH1"
Honda Pt# 90116-SPO-003

The clip that comes with the fairing deflectors is yet another size, but do not know the P/N for it.

All are available from Hondacuraworld.

If not found on their site at http://www.hondacuraworld.com, contact Tim directly at <hondacuraworld@aol.com>, or call, Tim will get them for you.

Note that for '08, Honda has finally replaced the clips with torx screws.

I replaced the one on the oil fill maintenance panel but all the others are original at 50,000 miles. That one was getting harder to reinstall as the "petals" were spread too far apart. The tupperware has been off many times for service and farkeling. Be careful and they last a very long time? And don't let a HD jockey push and pull on this and that.

The CA Sport Touring site shows 2 kinds of Gold Wing rivets. Anyone know if both are used on the 1300, and what Honda part numbers they correspond to?

Also, is the 2008 fiche available online? The most recent I've seen so far is '07.

Thanks,

Bob

Hard to tell exactly.

The stubby trim clip on the ST is 90657-SBO-003 and it looks like the BP3-104 (second one you listed).

But it only looks like it! Without exact dimensions or having them side by side, not possible to say if they are really the same. The one you are listing are much cheaper than the ST's!

Well, CaST shows them as fitting the 1300, and since I ordered a more expensive item I decided to throw in a pack of each. Like you say, they're cheap. And if they don't fit, I can probably sell them to a 'wing rider. I'll let everyone know whether they fit.

Here is an easy way to spot all the locations where you can find the "Stubby" 90657-SB0-003 "Splash Clip" (as Honda calls it) on your ST.

-- Look up the parts catalogue

-- In the Acrobat viewer, do a search on 90657

-- The search will take you to the corresponding Bill Of Materials. Look up the ballon number and find the location of the Clip on the page just above the BOM.

You'll find that the "Stubby" is used on the Rear Fender, Wind Screen and Lower Cowl.

On my ST, the Stubby Clip on the Lower Cowls are breaking from being removed and inserted too many times (and also found plain missing when coming back from the dealer, surprise!).

I had a second look at the other Wing Clip you purchased, and it may be close to the other Stubby Clip on the ST: 91549-MWO-790ZA.

If you run a search on this one in the ST Parts Catalogue, you will find that it is used to retain the Lower Middle Cowl. Would be interested to know if your Wing Clip (the one with the head sticking the furthest out) fits there?
