U-Joint Pre-Failure Indicator

You will want to change the rubber boot that covers the U-Joint and while you are in there replace the oil seal on the output shaft, I should have done this when I changed my U-Joint as it would have saved me pulling the swing arm off a second time for the oil leak.
 
I felt what seemed to be rough wheel bearings for a moment. That went away.
10 miles later there was a rattling noise sometimes rolling off the throttle.
Being my second u-joint going bad, I pretty much knew what was happening.
It had the lumpy resistance spinning the wheel.
95,300 miles this time, about 60,000 last time on a different ST1300.
On to the lift. About 6 hours later the new u-joint, that I had on hand for a 100,000 mark preemptive change, along with a new tire was installed.
Lucky. That was a couple hundred miles after my Newfoundland Labrador trip.
 
Check the length of the spacer between the bearings, I did it by lessening the through bolt a bit and noticed the bearings freed up. I don't know the specific length off the top of my head. Igofar might have that measurement
 
Ok, got to put mine on the centerstand and check it (50,000 miles) Ive had four honda mtcyls with shaft drive, never had any driveshaft issues!
 
I have had the same thing happen to me, made adjustments myself, having a lathe is so much fun.
