Update U Joint - Was a Bearing Issue instead

Rory,

I replaced the flange bearings Friday night and yes the noise on centerstand is gone. This was with OEM bearings that had no symptom of noise, notchiness, or gritty feeling. Have no worries that I would not return Bob's tools and manual.

Were your OEM bearings sealed? I know the replacement bearings from Miller are sealed. You also said you heard the same sound from a fairly new bike previously. I'm just trying to understand how the noise is generated. I was 99.9% sure it was a U-Joint until you had me look elsewhere and you came and proved otherwise. (Thanks) We were going to do nothing other than check the rear spline with the rear wheel removed for a possible bad u-joint. We found the rear spline smooth and no U-Joint problem. Instead, we found my driven flange bearings grinding and not free to move smoothly, certain resistance, and upon inspection, missing ball bearings and both bearings toast. My bearings where 100% bad but yours appeared to feel free and smooth.

Any ideas???

The noise on the nearly new bike was purely that of the wheel moved back and forth whilst on the centerstand, I did not run the engine in gear. My OEM bearings were like yours with only one side sealed. (6905 RS). The bearings from Miller are 6905 2RS (both sides sealed).
