Hi,

I've read all the threads about the Valentine 1 and fixing it. Just by chance, has anybody played around at concealing a Valentine 1 radar detector on an ST1300?

Thanks,

Mark

Not yet, but I will be soon.

On my 1100, it went in the left fairing pocket. No LIDAR, of course, but it worked pretty darn well otherwise. I think it may reside in the right hand pocket on my 1100, since most radar is set up on the right side of the road.

The may be room under the fairing in front of the side pockets, if you haven't fille that space with other farkles, but I haven't had my bodywork off yet, so that's speculative.

I did not hide mine. I put mine on a dash shelf and use Visalert. I am supprised that you would want to give up the arrows and bogy counter. I have found both of these things very helpful. I would think you could hide the V1 under plastic.

The issue is that this kind of equipment is not really welcome over here. I won't delve into the speeding issue, suffice to say that I consider safety as paramount.

I just don't want to have a V1 that can be seen. In case I get stopped or a police car / bike pulls up at the lights next to me. I was wondering if a tall enough modified tank bag would do the trick.

I would link the V1 to the Intercom. I'm not sure about the arrows. I'd also like to avoid having it chirping away as I get pulled over. The website doesn't mention VG2 proof technology but the shops do.

Radar detectors are illegal in many states, Va and DC immediately come to mind. Hence the desire to "hide" it.

I really like my Beltronics STi Driver. It's invisible to RDD's due to it's magnesium case and has already saved me on two separate LASER hits. I have mine on the dash but it seems like it would be pretty easy to hide since it has an ear phone jack. It also has a "smart" plug that shows a green power led, a red alert led and a mute button.

15 years ago a city bike Cop in Chico, California told me his radar detected detectors, and jammers too. Detectors aren't illegal here but i would assume they can find them where thay are.
Any LEO opinions?

If you read the mfg's claims there are no radar detectors that can evade RDDs. I would think a jammer is going to get you in hot water on 2 counts.
Evading and x'mitting without a license. LIDAR units do announce when they sense jamming.

A lot of cheap radar detectors leak signal like a seive, and are easily picked up not only by detector dectors, but will set off other people's radar detectors. The most commonly used detector-detector is the VG-2. The Valentine 1, Escort, and at least some other detectors have been tested and found essentially invisible to this device.

The newer Spectre RDD can pick up most of these, but only at close range. I know people who routinely use RDs in both Virginia and DC (no, I won't name names) and have never been "detected." That would be the least of my concerns in deciding whether to run an RD or not.

The comment about the Beltronics is interesting, though.

The RDD's are out there and more likely in Europe where usage of a Radar Detector is illegal in any vehicle. Canada forbids usage of Radar Detctors but I don't know about if they deploy RDD's..

Reiner

The OPP in Ontario definitely have RDDs. I understand that they have some of the latest technology RDDs that make even a passive RD visible.

If the RD was truly passive, I don't think there would be any way to detect it. But no current RD's are passive. The sensitivity would be so low as to be worthless.

I've been riding round the French Pyrenees for the last week so have been watching the limit point and not this thread.

As an aside: Wonderful scenery, no radars as pure speed is not really an issue unless you want to take chances with sheep / goats / horses / cows / pedestrians / cyclists / rocks / idiots driving in the middle of the road / sheer drops and a long way down... have I forgotten anybody ? :D It was amazing.

Anyway, thanks for your comments, I looked up the Sti Driver but it isn't tuned for European frequencies... Since it's illegal, nobody officially manufactures them apart from the V1 and true hard facts seem difficult to get even from specialised radar discussion sites.

Rant on

One could say that I should just stick to the speed limit, but some back roads are great for a blast and safe too. The issue is that speeding is just another road tax and it is more linked to luck than anything else here. Under the cover of safety lies finances. The police have no issues with other things illegal here (more difficult things to catch) like reading whilst driving, phoning without hands free, overtaking on the right, not stopping at stop sings, tail gating, etc.

Radars that take pictures have become boring so the fun bit is to put a radar and then engage in a pursuit. Gives the police a bit of fun. Also, unlike in the UK, the French police have no obligation to show the example so speed including in town.

Rant over :eek::

Laser is very common so I wanted some ideas as to how to hide an RD and keep that function. I'll keep thinking about this one...

Thanks for the link Bob, that's what I call creative thinking! I like the glasses case idea very much.
