Would like to thank everyone in this forum for all the info on Vista Cruise throttle locks. Tried both versions, ended up with the Yamaha type and it works great - out in the garage with the engine off. Someday, after the flood ends, look forward to trying it for real out on the interstate. Breakaway and Throttlemiester look great - I've just got other directions to send that much money for now.

Pretty much all the advice I read - was put to use - so glad I read about it first; sanding down the inner diameter of the VC, removing the grip, drilling and tapping for the 6/32 half inch screw into the switch housing, cutting the bent foot down to 1/16" for vertical alignment, nylon spacer cut down with half moons on opposite sides so the bar end weight wouldn't squeeze the rubber grip too tight and allow easy movement.

Thanks again to everyone for all the helpful information.

I have had my ST for 6 months and cruise/throttle lock is my first farkle. I am looking at a Univerasal Vista Cruise unit at my local dealer. The price is right for $28. They have 7/8" and 1" size. Surprisingly they are not sure what size should work on my '07 ST. I haven't measured my handlebar diameter yet, but I was wondering what size diameter VC you used? I also have stock grips that are still in good shape and wasn't intending to replace just yet. I've read many of the forum write ups on install tips and mods necessary for the VC unit to work on the ST. I think I am capable of the install.
Thank for the post.:pray1:

7/8 :)

Thanks for the response. Starting with the correct size is a step in the right direction for my first successful farkle.:D It finally stopped raining so I can go for a long ride today. I'll buy the VC unit today, but will wait for a rainy day for the install. All of the useful tips & pictures I've read on other threads will surely help me. I'll post up the end result. Get out and ride today!

The weather is turning cold here in Iowa so I took the time to install the Vista Cruise unit. My neighbor is a hard core winger and with him looking over my shoulder and giving plenty of guidance, we got the unit installed in less than an hour. Had to make the slight mods noted in the forums posted and the unit passed the 100 mile test I put to it today. The 40 degree temps and 20 mph NW wind made it a cool ride. It was nice to be able to take the right hand off the bars to wiggle some feeling back into the fingers (heated grips may be the next farkle :D). I'm an accountant by trade, so if I can do it........

O.K. another dumb question from yours truly, but is taking off the grip to install the Vista Cruise nylon throttle lock a must. I've done many of my own jobs on the bike so far, but not having gotten too far into putting on the lock yet, for the life of me I don't see how this thing is going to get past the grip and into the position where it goes. What say you?

ProV1, just open up the screw on the lock and then no need to take off the grip ;)

This is a yamaha pdf file that explains installation ...

Cut off and sand flush and smooth the tab at the bottom, sand just a touch off the inside of the lock, drill your holes to screw it into the throttle housing and your good to go. Tried it out today on I-55 and it felt down right foreign to be able to take my right hand off the throttle and yet maintain speed because of the lock. I feel like I just added about 200 miles to what I can comfortably do in a day with this little piece of equipment that was way cheap. Nice stuff. Thanks for the tips. And yes, I did take off the grip, but that was easy stuff, too.

I've read many of these Vista Cruise posts and finally ordered one for my '05 ST1300.

I couldn't figure out what the heck you guys were talking about when it came to cutting, glueing, tapping, etc.

Then it hit me... I bought a Universal Vista 7/8", which is totally different from the Vista Cruise for Yamaha or Honda.

The Universal Vista still needs modification to work, just like the Vista Cruise. The Universal Vista is the style with the clamp with an arm that attaches to the slip ring on the throttle grip.

Here's what I did to install mine (Universal Vista) today...

Lay a soft blanket or shop towel over your fuel tank.

Remove the right bar end weight, throttle tube, switch assy, and brake reservoir. Then remove the right bar from the bike. Why? Because there is not enough room to install the clamp between the switch and the clamp for the brake reservoir.

Once the bar was off, I drilled the same size hole 1/4" to the right of the existing hole under the bar. This is where the lower half of the switch indexes to the bar with a tab. This will allow the whole switch and throttle tube assy. to be slid to the right 1/4" to allow room for the Universal Vista clamp to clear. Note - you will drill slightly into the internal weight in the bar.

Clean up the mess from drilling, and remount the bar, brake reservoir, switch assy, and throttle tube. Leave the end weight off for now.

Loosely mount the clamp between the switch and brake reservoir clamp, and install the arm to the clamp. Slide the slip ring and rubber over the throttle grip. I discovered the short screw was too short, and the long screw and spacer put the slip ring too far onto the grip. I have containers full of various spacers, washers, etc, so I found a nice aluminum spacer about 1/4" to go between the arm and the slip ring, and I had to trim the long screw down about 1/4" to make things perfect. I also installed a small #8 brass washer on the head side of the screw where it enters the thumb tab. If you overtighten this screw, you will notice that the thumb lever compresses, making it harder to operate.

Ideally, I would think the arm should be below the kill switch, but where the wiring exits the switch prevents this from happening without chafing the wires. You can put the arm over the kill switch, but then it's a bit of a reach for your thumb. I installed mine so that the arm crosses directly over the middle of the kill switch so that the top and bottom of the kill switch are still accessible.

After aligning everything to your taste, tighten down the clamp and the arm. Square the slip ring on the grip and tighten the set screws. With the Universal Vista, the grip does not turn inside the rubber; the rubber/plastic assy. turns within the metal slip ring. No need for sanding the rubber, etc. Fine tune everything and then after you are satisfied, install your end weight. Make sure to put a drop of quality threadlocker on the bolt for the end weight. Make sure the Vista operates smoothly first, then install your end weight. If your throttle starts to bind, loosen the end weight a bit.

I am hoping to road test my masterpiece tomorrow.

I hope I helped someone else out there who was as confused as I was. Make sure you are reading the correct tutorial for the correct cruise model.

I will attempt to post some pics in the days to follow.

I just opened up my universal vista cruise to install on my 2006 st1300a. A little more than I want to attempt, thank you, so it is for sale: $25 OBO and I will ship it! email me at wdpa@teleport.com

I installed a universal VC on a yamaha and it was a piece of cake. I just loosened the brake reservoir and slide it to make room for the VC clamp. Then remove the rubber insert from the clamp ring and slide it over the grip. . Then replace the insert. No need to remove the grip. Basically I just folllowed the directions and it went well.
