Helmet modifications....risky and foolish or something a skilled craftsman -tradesman could do.... ??

The idea is to take a helmet with an internal drop down sun visor like an HJC or a Schuberth and a Shoei with none and combine the 2 into one....

For instance a Shoei RF 1000 with a drop down internal sun visor....

Go ahead, tell me I'm crazy and have a death wish :D:D

Or maybe not ??

I think you would just ruin a good helmet cutting in to the outer shell of the Shoei and weakin it to the point where it would do no good when needed. It would be very hard to seal around the cuts as well making a noisy helmet.:07biker::)

What the Hawkster said. Wouldn't want to throw any cold water on innovation, but in my mind, too many things could go wrong on something like this.

Looking at the different helmets and how they have incorporated the internal visor, it is apparent that by using the parts from some of them there would be very little in the way of shell modifications to the Shoei. The main mod would be to the internal padding to create room for the visor to move.

If the other manufacturers can do it safely it should be ok....don't know....maybe I am nuts, would not want to create a dangerous helmet.

A couple of inches of car window tinting material on the top of the shield will cut sun glare without affecting night riding. And it's cheap!!

A graduated tint visor or a tinted pin-lok insert would be safer imho. Modifying a perfectly good brain bucket doesn't make much sense to me I'm afraid. I know we don't include bouncing the bonce in the riding plan but it may happen, and I for one would rather have the bucket do the job it was intended for.

It may look easy, but if there's just the slightest difference in the bend of the visor to the shape of the helmet (although somewhat round, all helmets are not the same shape), then it will not slide buttery-smooth like they do in the manufactured helmets (like my Caberg Justissimo GT). And there's no
"internal padding" inside the void where the inner shield retracts--it's a void of space, and the visor never touches any part of the helmet internals. To do so would scratch it.

I think you'd ruin your Shoei by cutting it, and then you'd find the visor doesn't quite fit, and drags somewhere along it's path, scratching the shield to uselessness.

Just buy a new one. What's your head worth?

Honestly,
I would not mod a helmet to such an extent.
The only mods I have done to mine, are different visors, and adding a Scala Q2 headset.

The manufacturers are very experienced at making these helmets as safe as possible, and modding a helmet, adding internal workings, could compromise safety in an unusual or non obvious way, and you could find this out during an incident.

If you are looking to add an external visor, from what I read, they are ok, but get covered with bugs, dirt, and are a hassle. The internal ones are supposed to be best.

If you are looking to get a helmet with a flip down visor, look at manufacturers that offer those.

I am currently looking at getting a new helmet.
From my previous ride I have a few shorty helmets that may not work so well on the ST, and I have an 8 year old Shoei RF800 that I had a spill with at the track years ago (it has no marks on it, it only touched dirt)
But, most likely due to its age alone, its probably done and over with.

Similar to your situation, I would like a helmet with a sun visor, and a flip-up.
I'm down to 2 choices, the Shoei Multitec that does not have a visor period, and a Nolan N103 that has all the features I want (flip up, internal sun visor) but I'm just not sure if I want to move away from Shoei. Shoei helmets just "feel" good and well padded on my head.

So, to re-iterate, the short version.
I would NOT mod a helmet to the extent you are looking to do.

Whats wrong with the idea of just buying a helmet with the features you want?

IMO, the juice is not worth the squeeze in this kind of mod.

Here's my two cents worth, or perhaps it's worth a Queen Victoria fifty cent piece? I know people far more skilled than I, and I bet my friend Blue is one such person. This dude has many ideas, but I can't build STuff. Some of my ideas (never acted on) are now developed by others. I even had an idea for another Hummer style car, which they said I could send them with no negotiation, haha.

But how about developing your idea, and protecting it, then introducing it to the Industry? I imagine this is what you're up to anyway. This is juST a general comment for anyone changing something....to remember that the maker won't STand behind their product if altered, even if made better or more intereaSTing. But they might take notice?:07biker:

I really would love to try the Schuberth C3. Seems like it would suit my needs. The darn thing is so expensive to get sent over here though.

I suppose modifying a helmet is not such a great idea, but I have this problem with fixing and building and modifying things....

Will keep thinking about it. I wish Shoei would re-think their position on no internal sunvisors. As I said before, with so many other manufacturers offering them I believe it could be done safely by Shoei also.

I do love Shoei helmets. :04biker:

Make 2 or 3 and send them in for destructive testing. It's the only way you would know for sure that your mods would be safe. Either way ALWAYS wear a helmet, it's saved my noodle once already.
