I have been on the hunt for sometime now (about 8 months) for a different motorcycle to replace my 2008 ST1300. I have looked at many, NC700X, FJR1300, FJ-09, Super Tenere, Versys 650, Gen8 VFR800, BMW F800GT and the VFR1200X. Yep the list is all over the board for size and style. There lies the problem when looking nowadays. There are just so many bikes to look at, each having attributes that seem to fit the ticket.

Basic requirements: Must have storage capacity, must be lighter than the ST, must be easier to move around when not running, must have enough power to keep up with the wife on her 2008 VFR800 (LOL), and must have some general all around attributes that allows for a detour every now and then (dirt roads, not backcountry). The rub is I really like the ST1300, great bike in it's day, and this is not meant as a slam against the ST.

My list of bikes finally got narrowed down to the Super Tenere and the VFR1200X. Honestly I was going to wait until the first of the year, but we all know what happens when we search Craigslist. Well last week something popped up locally at a dealer that I have done business with for several years. A 2016 VFR1200X with 4900 miles on the clock. It has the OEM full luggage set plus the Power outlet and accessory power cable. At the end of the day Friday, we worked a deal and I traded the ST1300. I never thought I would do a trade with a MC dealer but these guys had the VFR priced right and were willing to give a reasonable amount for the ST.

I have only got about a 150 miles on it since I got it, prior plans and extremely high winds (40 to 60 mile an hour) on Saturday put a damper on riding. But so far it was the right decision.

So here are a few pictures in my garage.

Great looking/versatile bike, but the luggage looks like Igloo coolers.
But, I know, they are infinitely more useful than the ST's.
When the wind calms down get out and enjoy it. I'm parked for the winter. 12* this morning following another dusting of snow/ice.

I see a lot of Africa twins and Teneres on the road but I've never seen one of those. It looks like a nice bike. How many gallons does it hold? Same motor as the vfr1200f?

Very nice... that's what I would be on had Honda brought it over sooner.. I'm happy with the Super Tenere at the moment...

5.7 gallons. Don't know MPG yet.

Same design as the 1200f but detuned a bit. I think in the 130 HP range depending on what you read. But in the little bit I have ridden there is more than enough power. About 608 pounds

Yep they do but during the process the other VFR1200X's I saw were more expensive and no luggage. I want to say that the OEM panniers and top case are a bit over $2000 from Honda. They are roomy and oh my they go on and off easy.

Nice ride. How did you decide between the Tenere and the 1200X?

A couple of things. The VFR fit me better, although it seems a bit taller, was easier to move when not running, and since 1971 I have only owned four cylinder Hondas. (Stupid but that's the way it is.) I like four cylinder bikes, what can I say.

For the price range most of the Teneres used that I saw that had the Panniers and top case had milage above 15k, older years (2012 and 2013) and similar money.

Hey, congrats, now update your user profile info to make if official.

One of the things I really like about the 1200X is the torque and horsepower curves are nearly identical to the ST1300. 120 lbs less weight, I think you'll enjoy yourself!

The little bit that I have ridden it it is interesting that in 6th gear at 40 mph it does not care. Give it gas an it goes. For the type of day to day riding in Colorado, mountains and curve it will be wonderful. On the highway I have no doubt that it will just cruise along effortlessly.
