I have a 2012 ST that I'm not riding much anymore since I bought the Wing. It is set up for rally riding and it got me to the podium in the '25 IBR. Farkles include Clearwater lites, ADVMonster lites, heli-bars, heated grips, V1 Radar, Garmin XT, kickstand plate, Quadlock phone holder with wireless charging, RDL heated seat, custom made pillion replacement tool box with flat surface for duffel/camping gear, PSR highway pets, Aeroflow or VStream windshield, Yeti one-gallon hydration, tank bag, LED headlights, good tires, Auxiliary Fuel tank with electric pump, hyper lites at rear, backrest, baker air wings, upper and lower wind deflectors and probably some other stuff. Also have a bunch of parts including fairings, spare wheels, shocks, differential, mufflers (one set with CATs removed), etc.

The problem is that it has 146K miles on it and that scares the crap out of most people so selling it will mean practically giving it away. Of course I part it out, someone probably needs the windshield gears, wheels, and the ECU and the clearwaters but then you've got a chunk sitting in the garage which in MN can be hard to scrap.

I could just keep the bike as my backup bike and keep paying insurance on it. I could sell whole as is. I could part out. Another option I thought of is to hold onto it until the 27 IBR and provide it to anyone who has bike issues at the last minute, or whose bike craps out during the rally.

Any ideas?

I got I think, $500 on my 2014 BMW F800GT when I traded it in. With over 100K on it, I really didn't care how much I got for it. Even if I had gotten $1K for it, it wouldn't really be that much in the grand scheme of things.

In your case, I'd find a charity that accepts vehicle donations and give it away there. You'll feel good about the gift. You won't have any hassles with the sale. They'll get some needed dollars. It's a win-win.

Parting it out would painful, time-consuming and probably very little profit for your efforts when you counted the time invested.
Your best option is to sell it complete or give it away.
As you said, you could keep it for an IBR 'replacement' if you have the room - but then you have to keep it in some sort of running shape.

Does an ST ever get out of running shape? I wouldn't hesitate to take it cross country now, at least across the southern part. Gettin' nippy here in the morning.

Do you feel like you've gotten your money's worth out of it?

Once my bikes get near 100K I feel like I've gotten my money's worth and since nobody wants to buy a bike with that kind of mileage on them, I just use them for really bad weather riding or sell them for whatever I can get for them without stressing myself out too much (I sold my ST with 110,000 mi on it for $1200 iirc). My CB 1100 has 81,000 miles on it, and one of my NCs has 76,000 miles on it. Nobody wants to buy them with those kind of miles, so I just keep them in the garage and ride 'em on occasion. The 76K NC will be my winter bike. I have another NC I bought used with only 1,290 miles on it (which is why nobody buys high mileage bikes when there are a ton of low mileage bikes out there) and it's waiting in the wings to take over as #1 ride someday.

Man I'd love to take it as a spare to my '12, but not much space and my wife would probably kill me. My bikes got 217,000 and it keeps going. Public radio would love to have it donated. You could always put out an ad and see what happens.

Letting an ST sit without riding can cause some 'unexpected' surprises sometimes.
But then I live with those old 'carbureted dinosaurs' which is a little different animal ... ;)

There's a difference between what we know and what we value, vs the rest of the public who might be buyers. I had a 2011 NT700V. A "baby" ST. One BMW rider came up to me at Mt. St. Helens and asked what model of BMW it was. Every conceivable option was on it as I'd set it up for my "epic" post-retirement ride. I got one hit initially from a guy in Southern California. He wasn't interested in it unless it had less than 5000 miles. Really?!?! It's a sport-touring bike, not a garage queen! I had only 30,000 miles on it at the time. KBB value was around $7900. After a whole summer of not getting anyone to respond back, I finally found someone who took it off my hands for $5500. Just two people in four or five months who were interested in it. And that was in September with the Seattle rain just around the corner.

I think the bike was easily worth the $7900, but what someone is willing to pay is what the real value is.

I’m in the camp of ‘don’t part it out’. Otherwise, you may wind up with a frame and associated parts you can’t sell, then it goes to the scrapper, and if it’s a good running bike, that’s a shame. If you have the space (and think you will use it from time to time), then keep it (and as my bikes are insured, for liability only as they’re not worth too much in a loss), and if not, sell it for what you think it’s worth (or best offer) and sell it (as is, of course).
