What does ATGATT mean to you? What gear specifically

I think they give a bit more protection than that, I have seen a couple of low speed accidents where the rider seemed to suffer no injuries only wearing jeans and jacket. The following bus or pickup would be a greater danger but then motorcycle gear won't help in that case either. I agree at high speed the jeans are worn away in a second and then it is between the road and your skin.

Having crashed numerous times on pavement while wearing lycra and riding a bicycle, and crashing several times while wearing jeans (both on a bicycle and motorcycle), jeans provide significantly more protection. Jeans last through one or two low speed skips along pavement, and skin does not. whimper whimper
 
When I suddenly lost all power in Iowa on I-80 , I was getting off the highway lane , but then my tires got caught in the most severe rumble strips (deep ruts) I've seen . They got me crossed up fast , pitched me off the pavement edge into the weeds where I fell over on the right side plastic. I had on a Xelement net jacket with armor , including the shoulder , leather chaps over jeans , HJC full face helmet and gloves . Unfortunately the shoulder armor wasn't enough as I got a grade 3 AC joint separation anyway. The jacket and helmet , especially, got all chewed up. My chaps and gloves - not a scratch. I have the rear ( saddle bag ) guards in the addition of the usual ST1300 protuberances that protected my legs and feet apparently by the looks of them now. I lost my memory as I entered the weeds , crossed up. Don't remember the actual hit . ( concussion) Memory starts again with me , on my feet somehow , looking at the bike's scraped up plastic , with the paramedics trying to coax me down onto their stretcher for the ambulance ride .

ATGATT sadly means to me
A hassle from those that wear it all and I cannot due to my preference not theres.
I wear Jacket Gloves and helmet . I dont wear pants and would like to feel safer without the jacket as its just plain hot down here this time of year
I know Im most the way there but there is safety and there is heat stroke so I almost never wear the pants as just too freaking hot and swamp *** doesnt look to good in an office settings.
I know many will be like you have to wear them but we all know the risks and shouuldnt preach at others too much .
 
Everything all the time. sometimes I would forget earplugs. sometimes, while waiting for the green light, boiling, I wish I have Harley-way, sleeveless, topless, helmetless, xxxless... Then 2 visible scratches on my helmet come to my mind and immediately it's not hot anymore... :D
It's interesting, the more I ride more protection I wear...

And, if you don't mind me highjack the topic (it's kinda related though), do any of you have problems with your spouse/girl-boy-friend/your-significant-one don't want to ride ATGATT? My wife sometimes, when it's really hot, she refuses to wear anything except the helmet. Or she's not gonna ride with me. We did have few rides last month but I told her I'm not gonna feel a bit "guilty" if something happens. But, regardless, I feel so tense because it's always in my head "What if...?". I plan to send her some ugly images of road rushes to scare her. :)
I was thinking to refuse to take her to ride with me without at least some protection (and I wouldn't feel bad about it), but on the other hand I want her to enjoy with me...
Any idea how to convince her to wear at least some protection?
 
I suggest starting by upgrading her existing gear. If the problem is heat, how about a mesh jacket and pants with summer gloves that have mesh panels to accompany the leather palms and knuckle protection? The key to my wife's comfort in ATGATT is a wicking underlayer. You can get motorcycle specific underwear from, e.g. LDComfort, or drop into Costco or an outdoor/hunting outlet for end of season sales on base layer pieces. For the ladies they come in a variety of bright colours to complement the rest of the black-on-black gear. I also bought an extra set from Costco that are a merino wool blend, much lighter than my LDComfort set and ideal for keeping my skin from sticking to the inside of my textile waterproof riding pants.

I dont allow my wife to ride without ATGATT. She has commented I didnt always ride ATGATT. I do need to get her a better pair of boots.
 
Having been down HARD: All the gear means: Full faced helmet; earplugs; Kevlar-type jacket with shoulder, elbow and back pads; motorcycle-specific gloves; Kevlar-type overpants with hip and knee pads; motorcycle-specific boots. Having been down HARD: All the time means exactly that: even if I'm just going to the corner store. The under-layer varies from shorts and T-shirt to up to 3 layers and an electric jacket, all depending on the weather. My wife, who rides pillion, does exactly the same, only she dresses more warmly than I do.

At Rocky SToc this year we made a run to Mesa Verde, temperature was a little warmer there, hitting in the 90's. The pillion wanted to drop wearing a jacket while inside the park. Of course it is 20+ miles riding stil inside the park at speeds over 30 mph... so it was a definitive no from me.

I just explained that accidents can happen anywhere and she woudl still be cooler in the jacket then out. Keeps the sun off and slows evaporation so she could actually feel it.

Then she realized she still had the insulated liner zipped in from the morning ride down the Million Dollar Highway. Took that out and we survived, still ATGATT (well, she won't wear MC specific pants, but the rest is armored).
