Helmets What modular helmet to buy?

LS2 IS coming out with a SNELL 2010 (the current Standard) MODULAR . ( I capitalized both words on purpose )
It eliminates that big seem on the top of the helmet so noise is dramatically decreased. It will be unveiled at the Indianapolis Dealer show on February 17th.

I bought a Scorpioon EXO-900 a while back and now refuse to wear it. I bought it for the modular feature and to install a headset, but it is the noisiest helmet I've ever had. If I installed the headset I 'd probably blow my ears out with the volume to be able to hear it. Not only that, but the visor doesn't seal well to the helmet which allows it to leak in the rain. The seal is so bad you can see the gap between the edge of the visor and the surface of the helmet which also explains the high amount of wind noise. I've used Scorpion helmets for the last several years including the EXO-100 half, EXO-200 3/4, and an EXO-400 full face which I switch between depending on the type of riding I'm doing that day and have been happy with all of them. The EXO-900 was a definite disappointment.

After 4 years of use I'll buy another Shoei Multitec this year when the successor Shoei NeoTec hits the market and the older helmet goes out of production. I wear earplugs so noise isn't an issue. It keeps water out in rain and ventilates well. I wear the helmet on the ST as well as the naked R100 and despite it's bulk it is the most aerodynamically neutral helmet I have used. Even at high speeds turning my head from side to side does not create changes in buffeting or pulling to either side. I usually set the windshield rather low and on the R100 my head is in clean rushing air all the time. Some other helmets I've had pull one way or the other when turned to look to the side.

Re: What helmet to buy?

In general get one that is snug (not tight) and fits the shape of your head.

One I'd stay away from if it's still out there is the symax II. Don't have a problem with HJC in general but this one wasn't thought out well.
Noisy, fogs up easily, and it leaks.

My first lid was a Symax II. Nice, but yeah, it's LOUD. The slide down tinted lense is neat, but other lids have that, too.

I went to an FS15 that is a bit quieter, but still not great. I'm thinking about a Shoei Qwest later this year. I hear those are real quiet.

The fit, (meaning correct size and shape), of a helmet to ones head is as important as design and manufacture in achieiving a quiet helmet. Arai for example makes 3 different shapes just for this reason (round, oval and oval'er ;-) )

Dave if your helmet "pulls one way or the other" the helmet does not fit your head correctly.

Usually a sign that the helmet is the wrong shape for your head or vice-versa.
:)

I too have an assortment of helmets Nolan ,HJC ,presently own a Nitro 347.
They all leak, all are noisy.
Wear ear plugs take a dry nap in your tank bag for rain rides.
Snug fit and comfort is utmost.

Ante up the extra $ and buy the Neotec instead of another Multitec. The Multitec would be a mistake. The Neotec is 45% quieter and is a very nice helmet. The feature that impresses me the most and makes it worth the extra $ all by itself is the drop down internal sunvisor. After trying one on at this years motorcycle show and also trying on the Schuberth C3 I know my next new helmet will be the Neotec.

I was not all that impressed with the feel and fit of the Schuberth for my head.

Believe it or not, a drop down visor isn't a feature I desire and a Multitec small with optional 41 mm cheekpads is a perfect fit for me. After 4 years I want another one. Mistake? I am afraid changing styles may be a mistake for me when I am perfectly happy with my present favorite helmet for the reasons I mentioned. I'm sure that you will be happy with your new helmet.

Well of course that is totally up to you. I can understand what you like in your Multitec but I am sure those same features would be to your liking in the Neotec.

Think of it as an upgraded Multitec which is close to what it is. As time progresses manufacturers make improvements to their line.

Have you ever ridden a certain road at a certain time of day and found the sun almost directly in your eyes to the point of being nearly blinded ? I'd be surprised if your answer was no. Answer honestly. :)

I know I have experienced that many times over the years.

Having the sunvisor to click down with a quick move of the left hand will be just the ticket for those times.

In any case the decision is your own, just providing food for thought :)

Take your mind off that one track for a moment ;) :D

Get SERIOUS, I live in Ohio the land of "where the sun don't shine".......all joking aside I recently purchased a helmet with the drop down visor and got to use it on my first ride a few times as the sun was "in and out" with the clouds moving about I love it.

Sure I have been in that situation - I ride about 20,000 miles a year. I am spoiled for good optics and have to spend $500 plus for each pair of prescription progressive bifocals. There are just so many layers of plastic you can look through without distortion or prismatic changes so unless it is raining or heavy overcast I wear Costa framed wrap around shades now most all the time I am riding in daylight hours. In low light I have clear glasses. I used to carry a Aerostich Sunblocker but never actually used it - in low sun blinding situations I deal with it with my sunglasses or dipping my head.

However our different needs, I am sure you and I will both enjoy our new helmets.

My Nolan N100 never leaked a drop for over 8 seasons. It finally started leaking last season so I retired it.

When the Neotecs finally come out, the price on Multi-tecs should drop like a rock ... or like an St at a RTE (when everyones watching). :D

QUESTONs: When do you replace your helmet? What do you do with the old one?
