Where Can I Order an Oil Filter Wrench

You folks are going to get sick of me, but I've got a million questions.

Where can I order an oil filter wrench for my 05' ST? The dealer couldn't find one in their books, and I couldn't locate one in Dennis Kirk's catalog (I did see one in the catalog for an ST1100, but when I cross referenced the filter numbers they were not the same as the ST1300).

I know I can probably find something at an auto parts store that will work, but I'd prefer one that's designed specifically for this bike.

A simple cap style wrench works great. Pick up an oil filter and take it with you to the auto parts story. Find one that fits and you're good to go. I doubt there's an ST-specific oil filter wrench.

P.S. Search the forum for oil change tips. It can be quick and neat if you know what you're doing, or a real mess if you don't.

Even if your dealer, or any dealer finds one, whether it says Honda on it or not, it will look just like the one at the auto parts store....perhaps a different color...and a different co$t ;)

The design of filter housings is pretty much standard.

Oh, by the way, the filter diameter for the 1100s filter is the same as the 13s, so if you found a wrench that fits the 1100, it will also fit the 1300. (difference between the two filters is the length)

Be sure to read the various threads on changing oil. Wrapping the exhaust with aluminum foil and making the last few inches of the foil into a sort of "drain" will really help in avoiding a mess on the floor. and will keep the oil out of the bottom parts of the ST's abyss.
 
If you have a Cycle Gear near you, try them. I bought my Honda cap wrench from them ;)
 
Make sure you get a 'metal' oil filter wrench .... the plastic ones will expand and slip if the filter in on too tight .... I have a plastic one that I'll give you for free :eek::

I ordered one from my Honda dealer, the same one that they use
"in the back room" tried several of the plastic/metal stamped wrenches,
never had much luck with them... The Honda wrench, while more expensive
is metal and MUCH heavier than the ones available at the auto stores...

What I've spent on various wrenches, I could have probably bought two of the Honda wrenches. I haven't found an aftermarket that works with out slipping, ok to put them on with, but when its time to change the filter, forget it.
 
Got mine at an auto parts store for about $6. It's metal, fits the MH as well as PureOne filters, and uses a 3/8" drive.

Putt, How much does the Honda wrench cost now days. I bought one about 15 years ago for about 5 bucks for use on my 92 ST1100. Still use it today on the ST1300. It is kept locked up in my tool box when not in use. They are like gold.:03biker:

I was afraid someone was going to ask... If I remember,
it was around 20 bucks.... I spent that much on the plastic
and metal ones....

Didn't really work to great on the St due to the limited access, but this is what I use on most of our bikes and cars, I have several metal filter sockets, but this tool works on all sizes , made by Channel lock, I love these plyers, they come in 9" 12" & 15" stlyes.

Get a VECTOR part no. 17009... made in U.S.A.

It's a cap-type that fits snugly over the oil filter. It has a square hole dead center where you can fit the square head of a 3/8 adjustable wrench for loosening or tightening.

Or just remove the oil filter to be replaced and bring it over to the auto supply shop. They should have a similar cap-type filter wrench used for cars and the cost will definitely be cheaper.
 
my dealer uses the stamped cap wrenches that has a reciever for a half inch ratchet. i know becouse they left the thing on the filter after they changed it the first time. still wasnt worth the houndred bucks they charged for the oil change
 
Umm------I just use a strap wrench.
Works for me.
But that's just my opinion.
 
I have a plastic cap wrench that the outer walls and lip, are too thick to sneak in past the exhaust and center stand. Get a metal one, with a thin rim / lip. The metal one I got at local Farm and Fleet. It works real well.
It's the one on the left in the photo.

Heres my Honda Wrench, that is about 15 years old. Bought it in 1993 when I bought my 92 ST1100. Wrench works also on the ST1300 the Blackbird and numerious other Honda's. I guard it with my life.

That's the same filter wrench that I have.... It also fits a 1992 Honda NightHawk 750... I guess that makes my wrench 15 years old also... Man, that makes me feel old!!! :22yikes:
