Which Oil Filter?

FYI, in over 45 years of throwing wrenches as motorcycles, I've only see TWO oil filter related incidents, and in both cases, the engine was toast!
How did the oil filter cause the engine to fail? Did the cardboard end piece fall apart, get pumped through the oil galleries, and like a large clot, cause a blockage that stopped oil flow? Or did the can fail and oil was dumped allowing the engine to run dry?

I believe there may still be a memo that was issued on this one somewhere, I'll see if I can find them.
It was something to do with the quality control (cheap) of the chrome plating that caused blockages and damaged the engines.
IIRC Honda first tried to blame the oil used, only to find out it was also the factory Honda brand oil, then looked further, and upon inspection blamed the chrome filter.

Just did my first oil change on my '07. ("My" first)
It had a filter on there about 4" long. Didn't pay attention to the brand.
Down to the Honda shop for an OEM. About 2" long.
Zowie! Tiny and $18 ?!?!?
Who's found a good one?
Apparently the OEM looks a little weak.
Thanks.
Purolator Pure One - PL14610 - buy them at your local auto parts store.
Six years and 30,000+ miles without issues.

Some of the older Guzzi's had chrome plated cylinder bores. After a while, some bikes' plating started flaking off at the top of the cylinder, contaminating the oil and eating up the engine. The aftermarket fix (if done before the chrome started flaking) was a pair of Nikasil coated cylinder bores (a roughly $1000 fix on a bike worth maybe double that). But don't a lot of us lavish TLC on bikes without regard to cost? Some examples of the same bike would, like ST's run forever with no problems.

I just ordered 6 Bosch filters for $3.57 each from RockAuto. Tax and shipping works out to $5.47 each.
Be sure to check the Bosch filters before installing them, as there was a nation wide recall a while back.
Make sure the base sinks inward towards the filter, not outward (dome shaped).
They had several recalls, and changed from grey boxes, to black boxes, to blue boxes.
RockAuto may be selling the ones they could not sell cheap ;)
If the rubber gasket is really thick, this was the second attempt to get them to work, and they were recalled a short while later also.
RockAuto has been known to sell knock off NGK plugs, and stuff that was pulled from shelves etc.
Sometimes when things are too cheap to be true, they are.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to check them when they arrive.

Because of my commute, before the Pandemic and before I got laid off, I had bought 10 K&N 204s off eBay for $10 apiece. I think I have about 15 filters now, and I'm suspecting, those should hold me over for a few years, now that I'm not putting on that kind of mileage! :)

You were right Larry. Dome shaped base with extra thick washers. Anybody want a good deal on 6 $%#@&*! up filters:mad: Would anybody happen to have a link to the recall that I can send them?
thanks Larry

Those are probably at least three years old.
Sorry I didn’t get to warn you in time.

I use a Bosch 3323. It's a little longer than the 3300 but fits well on the ST1300. Interestingly the 3323's box shows a filter with a convex base (bad bad for ST) but the actual filter base is concave (good for ST).

It doesn't have a nut on the end for removal but I've found a properly fitted cap-style filter wrench easily removes a properly installed filter with no sweat or swearing. I've also found a properly installed filter (if not too hot) can almost always be removed by hand.

Can't they be returned?
Even if it was a clearance item, they should not be selling defective and/or recalled parts without disclosing that information.
If they did, than it is buyer beware.

Actually they just sent me a return label and so far have been very good about returning them. I believe Bosch had replaced the washers with thicker ones to fix the recall but I could be mistaken?

Rock Auto was really good about refunding my money. I explained the problem with the filters and they sent me a pre paid shipping label. They refunded my money as soon as they received the package.
