Whine no more!

Has any of this to do with the problem I have??? or have you run accross this issue? I have a Roady XT and a Autocom Pro 7. I get terrible noise in the intercom just when both are running on bike power without the engine even running. It's coming from the power plug on the Roady. Any thoughts on this. Could be a defective plug on the Roady. I do know that it does convert down to 5 volts. Also it doesnt' make any noise when running the Roady in my truck with the same plug. Tried all the power connections but havent twisted wires yet. Any ideas? The solution I am using is to just run the Autocom on the battery, but would like to get it using bike power.

Hi,
twisting only keeps the wires close together and offset by a arbitrarily changing radial angle, so any induced voltage/current is cancelled out by the returning current. The "twisting" itself doesn't add much safety to the signal. There's a thing about current, conductor direction, and force, but I don't think that's relevant, and I can't remember the details!
I would go with grounding to the frame, as far from the alternator as possible.
So, I'm with Rob Hephner.

Twisted Pair with Shield

Found this while searching for the perfect farkle wire (which these guys have, also):
Twisted Pair With Shield
westmarine.com
Model 542266 $2.19/ft
In the West Marine 2006 Master Catalog page 553

On a separate note - their "Marine Grade" wire looks to be measurably better than the automotive grade wire that most of us are probably using.

Also ............... "Instrument Wire"

West Marine (westmarine.com) has "Instrument Wire"
Twisted pair of red and black conductors with a 100% mylar foil shield and drain wire. 20-3 gauge. Model 198754 only $1.25/ft

For those that have never raced, nor prepped a race bike, I can assure you'll be impressed with the simple mechanical ability of the device available below:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=45341

Twists wire up with a couple of quick pulls, and I use the pliers and wire for a load of other applications (hanging pictures for example).

Eliminates the really annoying over/under situation completely.

A must for working on planes too! After all, you even have to safety wire the oil filter too.

By the way, if you really want answers straight from the horse's mouth, here is the guy that helped bring twisted pair technology to the automotive market.

If you have any questions about noise, current or anything electronic related he is the guy to ask.

Ask and he will answer!
