In my younger years as a lieutenant in the USAF, my mentor and good friend (a Captain) told me two things that have stood me well in the decades since then. One of the two sayings was, "It's easier to get forgiveness than permission."
This came up in regards to our mutual boss, a major. He couldn't make a decision to save his life. And if you asked for the afternoon off, he'd finally decide it was okay at about 4 pm. At that point...who cares. My friend's advice was to take the afternoon off and just do it. If the major found out later...seek forgiveness.
Got any good ones to share?
