Worn adjustable screen cables

Hi MR,

I'm the other guy Sennister was referring to. I have just one question: Am I reading correctly that on the brand new one there is NO grease in the tracks that the plastic blocks slide in? I greased mine and I'm thinking maybe I should clean them and put them in dry?

Thanks,

Mark

Yeah, I found that interesting as well. It is possible that the grease works its way up from the cables and gets deposited in the track area. I don't see how it could get to where the plastic blocks are though.

As a side note, I pulled the shims from my plastic blocks last night. I played with it looking for signs of binding and movement. I really didn't notice anything that would be of major concern to me.

I also looked at pulling the white plastic block in the gear mechanism. It buys me a little space but not enough to shim the gear right from what I can tell. I would have to modify how the cable guide mounts to the gear block as that still holds it up in roughly the same position.

I was just thinking that even if you could get a little change it might work for a while if you got the mechanism working more smoothly. Just a thought.

Hello Mark,

On the new unit, the blocks are greased and there was but a trace of grease on the tracks. It looks like that comes from the blocks moving up and down during a test.

I have operated the new unit a number of times after installation to check everything was working properly and this smears the grease from the blocks onto the slides.

IMHO, the fact that you greased the tracks is not a problem if you check periodically to make sure you aren't accumulating too much grime.

BR,

Mark

If I replace the mechanism with a new one. I think the first thing I will do is take it apart and clean out all the grease and relube with something else. Then I will make it part of my winter maintenance to remove/clean/relube the guides and cables.
